Denzel Washington Stars in 'The Equalizer' Film Adaptation
Denzel Washington stars as former black ops commando McCall in the action thriller The Equalizer, a big screen adaptation of the classic 1980's TV series by the same name.
Living a quiet life in Boston after faking his own death, McCall is compelled to come out of retirement to rescue a young prostitute named Teri, played by Chloë Grace Moretz. In the process, he comes up against some violent Russian gangsters. Despite being in mortal danger, McCall is motivated to work as a vigilante on behalf of helpless victims with the odds stacked against them and nowhere else to turn.
The cast also features Marton Csokas (The Amazing Spider-Man 2), Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Johnny Messner (G.I. Joe: Renegades) and popular character actor Bill Pullman.
The movie teams Washington with Antoine Fuqua, who directed the actor in his Oscar-winning performance in 2001's Training Day. Faqua's more recent work includes last year's Olympus Has Fallen. The screenplay was written by Richard Wenk, who wrote 2012's The Expendables 2.
In an interview with USA TODAY, Fuqua praised Washington's performance in the role of McCall, which was originally portrayed by British actor Edward Woodward.
"There's a switch that [Washington] turns on, and that's just scary," says Fuqua. "There's a sustained intensity even in casual mode, like a panther. If it's turned against you, you're going to be in a bad place."
The Equalizer hits theaters Sept. 26.
