The fastest in state history in their primary events, Middletown's Isabelle Walsh and Salesianum's Ethan Walther earned Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Year honors as awarded by the state's coaches.
Walsh and Walther each won the 1,600 and 800 at the state championships Feb. 3 in Landover, Maryland, and at other points in the season ran the fastest times in state history in those events. Walther also broke the 3,200 state record.
They lead the 2024 indoor track and field All-State teams, which are composed of the event winners at the state meet.
In consecutive weeks, Walther ran 1:54.90 in the 800, 4:14.39 in the mile and 9:18.23 in the 2 mile to set state records in each event. In the last half-century, no other boy has at once held the Delaware indoor records in the three individual distance events.
At the state meet, he cruised to a five-second victory in the 1,600 and took over in the final lap to win the 800 in a meet record. Walther also ran on Salesianum's third-place 4x400. He was the last runner left on the track cooling down.
On March 10, he placed 23rd in the 800 at New Balance Nationals in 1:54.41.
After a slow opening lap, Walsh took command of the 1,600 state championship race and led the rest of the way. Keyed by a 67-second final 400, Walsh won by six seconds in a meet record time. She then won the 800 off a faster first quarter in another meet record performance.
The following week, Walsh placed fifth in the mile at Millrose Games in 4:46.27. For record-keeping purposes, it is converted to a 4:44.61 1,600. That's more than 10 seconds faster than anyone in Delaware ran in the previous five full indoor seasons.
The 800 state record entering the year — Lydia Olivere's 2:13.93 — was broken three times this season. Walsh was the first to the record, running 2:11.44 in early January and lowering that mark by a tenth of a second at the state meet. On the final day for state-record eligible performances, Tatnall's Abby Downin ran 2:09.74 on Feb. 24 at Ocean Breeze in Staten Island. In the same race, Walsh ran 2:10.88.
On March 9, she placed fourth at Nike Nationals in 2:09.22, the fastest time in state history, but outside the official high school competition season.
