Deion Sanders shares the biggest lesson he’s learned as Colorado’s head coach

Athletes and coaches alike, the best are always working to improve their craft.

Deion Sanders is no different in his latest venture as Colorado’s head coach. His first season in Boulder hasn’t been perfect, but Sanders admitted that even he, one of the greatest ever to play the game of football, is learning on the job.

Earlier this week, I asked Coach Prime to share the biggest thing he has learned about himself so far this season. He first responded with one word: patience.

“Patience is everything. Where we came from (Jackson State), we hadn’t lost a regular season game in two years. In high school, maybe one in the last three or four years,” Sanders said. “It’s tough to be patient and understand the formula of winning, you have to get pieces, everybody has to be all in, you have to paint the picture and they have to understand the portrait that was painted and you’ve gotta be on one accord.”

Prior to this season, Coach Prime made it clear that his goal was to win immediately, so he likely didn’t envision his Buffs being under .500 through nine games. However, he’s now recognizing that a strong foundation takes time to build.

Colorado’s final home game of the 2023 season kicks off at noon MT on Saturday against Arizona.
