Defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson is the first New York Giants rookie to sign a contract, according to his agents.

Tomlinson, a second-round draft pick out of Alabama, is represented by SportsTrust Advisors. His deal is reportedly a four-year deal worth $4.57 million with a $1.46 million signing bonus. His cap hit for 2017 is $831,184.

Signing NFL draft picks has been significantly easier because the collective bargaining agreement introduced in 2011. Rookies’ salaries based on where they were drafted so there is little room for negotiation.

Tomlinson is expected to compete for the starting defensive tackle position vacated by Johnathan Hankins. Hankins departed in free agency to sign with the Indianapolis Colts. The Giants currently have All-Pro Damon Harrison at the nose tackle spot. Jay Bromley and Robert Thomas will compete with Tomlinson for the starting spot next to Harrison.

Tomlinson is an interior lineman who can stop the run and pressure the quarterback, something the Giants were missing with Hankins last season. He accumulated 122 tackles (including 10.5 for a loss) and four sacks for the Crimson Tide. Tomlinson improved every year he was at Alabama, racking up 62 tackles in his final season.

The Giants’ rookies and unsigned players will report to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center for the first time on Thursday. A three-day rookie mini-camp begins on Friday.
