Deadline spurs action: 49ers, K Robbie Gould agree to new contract
Monday is the deadline for teams and their franchise-tagged players to reach a long-term contract agreement, or the player must play the 2019 season on just the tag.
One of the three players who fall into that category has agreed to a new deal.
Gould, 49ers agree
Via multiple reports, the San Francisco 49ers and kicker Robbie Gould have agreed to a multi-year contract.
It’s a two-year, fully guaranteed pact for $10.5 million, but includes an option that if exercised can become a four-year, $19 million deal with $15 million guaranteed.
Having the first two years fully guaranteed at $10.5 million is basically equal to what Gould would have earned had he played under the franchise tag in 2019 and 2020 – the tag amount for kickers this year is $4,971,000; were he tagged next year, Gould would receive 120 percent of that amount, or $5,965,200.
Gould has change of heart
It’s a change for Gould from April, when the 36-year-old and his agent told ESPN that he wanted to be traded, pulled their contract proposals and wouldn’t negotiate a multi-year deal.
Gould’s wife and young family have remained in Chicago since he was cut by the Bears out of training camp in 2016 — the family recently built a home in the Windy City — and he wanted to be closer to them. As it happens, Chicago’s kicking situation has been a mess since it released Gould.
Gould has been with San Francisco since 2017, and has been stellar, converting 72-of-75 field goals and 55-of-59 extra points.
