Who is Deacon Hill? A look at the Iowa Hawkeyes’ quarterback

After Cade McNamara went down with a leg injury, it was time for the backup quarterback. Enter in Deacon Hill. The Iowa Hawkeyes turned to Hill early in the game against Michigan State and may be having him at the helm for the future pending McNamara’s injury diagnosis.

Hill came in and did enough to help the Hawkeyes get the win and move to 4-1 on the season. He will now have an entire week of prep to get ready to take on the Purdue Boilermakers. He isn’t the only one prepping, though.

Iowa fans are also entering a new week of prep and will want to find out who exactly Deacon Hill is, where he comes from, the path that has led him to Iowa, and how he can succeed in the role of the starting quarterback.

Deacon Hill was a four-star recruit coming out of high school per his 247Sports profile. According to the 247Sports composite ranking, he was the 39th overall quarterback in the class of 2021.

Per Rivals, ESPN, and On3, Hill was a three-star recruit. ESPN had Hill as the 49th-ranked quarterback in his class, On3 had Hill as the 36th-ranked quarterback, while Rivals had him as the 22nd-ranked quarterback.

Deacon Hill spent just one season as a member of the Badgers prior to transferring to Iowa prior to the 2023 season. As a member of the Badgers, Hill did not register a passing attempt and just appeared in one game.

As a member of the Hawkeyes, Hill has a stat line of 15-of-35 passing for 164 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception.

  • Great size and durability to utilize on QB sneaks

  • Above-average play-action passing and rollout ability

Weaknesses:

  • At times trusts his arm too much and may force throws

  • Minimal game experience in recognizing coverages

  • Needs to know when to use touch on shorter throws
