Thurston girls, Sheldon boys win big at OSAA state track and field championships

The 2023 OSAA state track and field championships concluded Saturday at Hayward Field with a slew of strong performances from Eugene area athletes.

Here are the top performances from the state meet.

Churchill's Addison Kleinke sets the bar high in 5A girls pole vault

This is only just the beginning for Churchill freshman Addison Kleinke.

Kleinke smashed the state meet record that had stood since 2009 in the Class 5A girls pole vault with a season PR jump of 13 feet, 4.5 inches.

"The beginning of the season was really tough," Kleinke said. "I was struggling with some mental toughness, staying strong mentally, and I feel like I've really been working through that ... and I got the height that I was really hoping for."

Sheldon boys win multiple 6A titles

Sheldon junior Terek Logan won the Class 6A boys high jump title with a mark of 6-05.

Terek finished tied for second with senior Francis Anderson-Blankenship of South Eugene in pole vault (14-06) and third in long jump (22-02.50).

Sheldon's relay team comprised of junior Owen Phillips and seniors Brock Thomas, Grafton Robinson and Zachery McEwen won the 4x100 relay in 41.90.

"Ever since football ended this is all we really wanted to do," said Thomas, who was the quarterback for the Irish football team that lost in the Class 6A championship last fall. "I knew we could do it and we just worked really hard every single week of practice, every meet we just kept improving and it feels really good."

Phillips finished second in long jump (22-08) and fifth in triple jump (42-11).

"I never thought I'd be a state champion," Phillips said. "It's pretty crazy to do it at Hayward Field, my hometown and with these guys, send them out with a gold medal."

Thurston wins 5A girls 4x100-meter relay

Thurston's relay team comprised of freshman Brooklyn Anderson and seniors Rainey Simmons, Kylie Jones and Breanna Raven were victorious in the Class 5A girls 4x100-meter relay in 49.06.

Raven finished second in the 200-meter with a time of 25.35 and in long jump with a mark of 17-04. Anderson finished third in the 100 in 12.60.

Thurston's Breanna Raven defends 5A girls triple jump title

Raven entered the Class 5A girls triple jump feeling mentally and physically positive.

That positivity was just what Raven needed to defend her title with a mark of 38 feet 10.5 inches, which tied the state meet record set by Ashley Potter of Thurston in 2007.

"I was hoping for a PR and hoping to have fun, and I did just that," Raven said.

Junction City's Elaina Deming wins 4A girls pole vault

Junction City junior Elaina Deming won the Class 4A girls pole vault title with a jump of 10-02.75.

Marshfield's Bodey Lutes breaks state meet record in 400, wins 4x400

Marshfield sophomore Bodey Lutes did not expect to be competing at the state meet let alone set a new state meet record in the Class 4A 400 meter with his time of 48.29.

"I'm in awe," said Lutes, who moved from Arizona to Oregon at the start of the season. "It was always the goal, but to actually plan it and do it, it's awesome. "

His time surpassed Ross Krempley's (Sherwood) time of 48.51 set in 1997.

Lutes was also a member of the 4x400 relay that took home the title with a time of 3:26.27. He finished second in the 800 (1:58.66).

Marshfield's Alexander Garcia-Silver breaks 4A boys 3,000 meet record

Alexander Garcia-Silver has had to overcome a lot this season with the death of his grandmother and dog all in the same week.

Despite the challenges, Garcia-Silver blew past competitors in the Class 4A boys 3,000 and broke the state meet record in the process with a time of 8:31.08.

His time was 0.5 milliseconds better than the 1994 state meet record set by Billy Harper of Junction City.

"So, 400 meters to go I was like, okay, I have to close," Garcia-Silver said. "I've struggled this season with having a kick but again, believing in yourself was the biggest thing. Just hearing the roar from the crowds was just amazing. I didn't feel alone those last 400 meters was just incredible."

Marshfield's Jonathan Parks defends Class 4A boys pole vault title

Marshfield junior Jonathan Parks didn't know if he would ever pole vault again after the motorcycle he was driving struck a deer going 70-mph five months ago. As a results, Parks shattered his collarbone and broke his wrist.

Parks was able to bounce back by nonstop vaulting and dedication, despite doctor's orders, to reach the state meet for the third consecutive year.

"I was scared to death I'd never be on a pole," Parks said.

Parks won the Class 4A boys pole vault with a jump of 15 feet for the second year in a row.

"It makes it huge because I didn't even think I'd be here," Parks said after winning the title.

Parks, who stands at 5-foot, 6 inches, was challenged by his teammate Trent Summers, who finished second with a jump of 14-09.

Siuslaw's Kyle Hughes wins 3A boys pole vault title

Kyle Hughes can officially call himself a champion for Siuslaw after he jumped 15 feet to win the Class 3A boys pole vault.

The senior hit the winning mark on his second-to-last attempt, beating Banks' Caden Harris (14-00).

  • Class 6A girls 100-meter hurdles: South Eugene's Sarah Money finished second with a time of 14:92.

  • Class 5A girls javelin: Thurston's Bailey Tovey finished third with a throw of 127-06.

  • Class 5A boys discus: Churchill's Javin Petry finished second with a throw of 144-07.

  • Class 4A girls long jump: Marist's Cloe Chase finished second in long jump with a mark of 17-03.50.

  • Class 4A boys 3,000: Cottage Grove's Jaden Owens and Carter Bengtson finished second and third in 8:52.43 and 8:53.50, respectively.

  • Class 4A boys 200: Cottage Grove's Brennen Murphy finished second with a time 22.18.

  • Class 4A boys javelin: North Bend's Keegan Young finished second with a throw of 177-04.

  • Class 3A boys long jump: Pleasant Hill's Jackson Weller finished second with a mark of 20-02.50.
