Dartmouth football makes GNB Voc-Tech pay for mistakes in Week 2 matchup

NEW BEDFORD — Just about anything that could go wrong for the GNB Voc-Tech football did on Friday night.

The Bears turned over the ball four times and had a costly bad snap and Dartmouth took advantage in a 28-13 non-league victory at the Jeffrey E. Riley Football Stadium.

“To beat a Dartmouth football team in general, you have to play perfect football for four quarters and we didn’t do that,” said GNB Voc-Tech head coach Justin Cruz. “We had times where we looked really good early and then we had times where we didn’t look good at all.”

Three of Dartmouth’s four touchdowns came on short field following miscues by the Bears.

“It was a lot of bad field position and we made mistakes,” Cruz said.

Dartmouth also had trouble holding onto the ball and actually turned it over twice in the game’s first five minutes and another time late, but the Bears were only scored once off the turnovers.

“It was sloppy by both teams,” said Dartmouth head coach Rick White said. “We couldn't have started off any worse I think. The ball was popping out left and right. We’re lucky to get out of here tonight with a win. We played good enough to win, but it wasn’t very good.”

HOW IT HAPPENED

Dartmouth fumbled on its opening play of the game and Voc-Tech took advantage of that one as the Bears scored on a nine-yard run by junior Harrison Cabral to go out front 7-0.

Voc-Tech’s Reyli Castellano picked off quarterback Jackson Hart on Dartmouth’s next possession, but the Bears’ drive into DHS territory stalled at the 30. Voc-Tech couldn’t convert a fourth-and-5.

“I think we have a pretty good defense,” Cruz said. “To beat them you really have to capitalize when you make those turnovers and we didn’t.”

Dartmouth went on to score 19 straight points — on a pair of touchdown runs by junior Ray Gramlich and a 13-yard scoring strike from Hart to junior Markus Andrews — to head into halftime ahead 19-7.

Week 2: Fairhaven's Derek Almeida not satisfied after second win for his undefeated Blue Devils

“They’re a good football team,” Cruz said. “Coach White has some guys in positions where his offense runs really well. He’s got some good skilled guys and they played sound.”

Gramlich added a six-yard touchdown run in the third and senior Louie Freitas knocked down a 30-yard field goal to cap Dartmouth’s scoring.

It was Freitas’ first field goal of the season and his fifth over the past two years.

“I was pretty confident about it,” Freitas said. “I know I had the leg to do it. I just lined up and put it through the uprights.”

White added, “It’s nice to have that weapon in your back pocket. He’s pretty consistent.”

Voc-Tech added a touchdown midway through the fourth quarter on a one-yard run by Cabral.

WHAT IT MEANS

With the win, Dartmouth improves to 2-0 and will travel to Old Rochester (1-1) next Friday. “It’s a win, but we’ve got a lot of work today,” White said. “We’re going to Old Rochester next week and that’s not going to fly.” … Voc-Tech, which falls to 1-1, visits undefeated Fairhaven (2-0) next Friday. “We need to get better because the Blue Devils next week are waiting for us,” Cruz said.

COACH’S CORNER

“I told them we have to stay together. We’ve good some good football players, but we can acknowledge we didn’t play perfect football for four quarters like we needed to. We can’t turn on one another.” — Cruz

PROUD MOMENT FOR WHITE

White said he looks forward to facing GNB Voc-Tech’s coaching staff, which includes Dartmouth alum in Cruz, Wes Lima and Kyle Sullivan. “ There’s three of my former players over there. I’m proud of them,” White said. “I love it. I love seeing those guys working in education. I love seeing them coaching because they’re doing good things for the community. I’m a pretty proud coach when I see those guys.”
