D4 State Golf: Coldwater's Frisinger leads Hillsdale Academy to runner-up finish

BATTLE CREEK, MI. - The Hillsdale Academy Colts capped off an amazing 2023 season on the links this past weekend, taking runner-up honors at the MHSAA (Michigan High School Athletic Association) Division Four Golf State Finals held at the Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek.

Hillsdale Academy finished in second place overall behind the state champions from Clarkston Everest Collegiate who won the title with a score of 625, carding a day one score of 315 and a day two score of 310. Hillsdale Academy finished day one of the tournament in second place after a score of 325 and cemented their status in the runner-up spot with a day two score of 317 for their overall score of 642, eight strokes better than the third place team from Maple City Glen Lake who finished with a score of 650.

Hillsdale Academy’s runner-up finish was paced by Coldwater’s Rykert Frisinger who earned All-State honors with his third place finish in the individual standings. Frisinger carded a day one score of 76 followed by a day two score of 74 for his two day total of 150, placing him in a tie for third place with Blake O’Connor of Maple City Glen Lake.

Hillsdale Academy’s Ridley Fast also finished inside the top 10 to earn All-State honors, taking fifth place overall in the individual standings. Fast carded a day one score of 77 followed by a day two score of 75 for the two day total of 152.

Individual state title honors went to Remy Stalcup of Clarkston Everest Collegiate with a two day total of 142, carding a low round of 70 on day one followed by a day two score of 72. Just behind Stalcup was his brother Parker Stalcup, also of Clarkston Everest, who put together a two day score of 148 after rounds of 76 and 72. In all Clarkston Everest had three golfers finish inside the top 10 en route to the state title.

Pacing Hillsdale Academy in their runner-up finish was Frisinger and Fast, followed by Conner Welden with a score of 166 (82 and 84), placing him in twenty-fifth place; Kahle Welden with a 174 (90 and 84), putting him in forty-seventh place; and Quincy eighth grader Lincoln Knirk who fired a two day total of 188 (95 and 93), good enough for eighty-second place.

Other golfers of local interest include Burr Oak’s Flavio Hernandez who finished in thirty-sixth place with scores of 88 and 83 for a 171 and Colon’s Simon Vinson who finished in forty-seventh place with scores of 90 and 84 for a 174.

Hillsdale Academy will lose only one of their top five scorers from their runner-up campaign, as senior Conner Welden will move on due to graduation.
