Cross-country roundup: Willmar Cardinals come home with 2 titles at Rocori Invitational

Sep. 21—COLD SPRING — Willmar swept the top spots at the Rocori Invitational cross-country meet on Thursday.

Sully Anez took the top spot in the boys race and Lauren Eilers claimed first place in the girls race at River Oaks Golf Course.

Anez, ranked third in Class AA, crossed the finish line in 16 minutes, 2.20 seconds. He beat the second-place runner, Dylan Riniker of Stillwater, by over 28 seconds.

The Willmar boys placed third with 39 points, trailing Stillwater (29), Wayzata (71) and Fergus Falls (79).

Fathi Dubet added a fourth-place finish for the Cardinal boys at 16:49.00.

In the girls race, Eilers placed first at 19:04.60. She ranked third in Class AA.

The Cardinal girls finished second with 78 points. Alexandria was the team champion with 30.

Willmar's Sophia Negen also placed in the top 15, placing 11th at 20:47.60.

The Cardinals' next meet is its home invitational on Saturday, Sept. 30 at Eagle Creek Golf Club. The first race is slated for 10 a.m.

The Litchfield boys placed second in the Glencoe-Silver Lake Invitational at GSL High School in Glencoe.

The Dragons came up with 111 points, with Sibley East winning with 108. August Swenson was Litchfield's top runner after placing third at 17 minutes, 45.2 seconds. Judah Allen added a ninth-place finish at 18:37.6. St. James' Levi Miest won at 16:53.6.

The Dragon girls were fourth with 109. They trailed St. Peter (88), Sibley East (89) and Gibbon-Fairfax-Winthrop (108). Elsa Helstrom paced Litchfield with a sixth-place time of 21:11.1. Lester Prairie's Addison Hoof won the girls' race at 19:31.1.

Litchfield next competes at the Dassel-Cokato Invitational at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Collinwood Park in Cokato.

Madi Wendlandt paced the Paynesville/Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa girls to a first-place finish at the Eden Valley-Watkins/Kimball Invitational at the Kimball Golf Club.

The Bulldogs finished with 36 points, beating host EV-W/Kimball's 54. Wendlandt had the top time in 20 minutes, 53.2 seconds. Teammate Lauren Ellefson placed fourth at 23:02.9.

The Paynesville/BBE boys were sixth with 125 points. Taylor Nelson was the team's top runner with an 11th-place time of 19:33.2. Holdingford won with 23 points and EV-W/Kimball's Henry Lemke won at 16:41.2.

Paynesville/BBE hosts an invitational at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday at Koronis Hills Golf Club.
