Cowboys win no waiver claims, begin building practice squad with their own cuts

The Cowboys were painfully quiet in free agency in 2022. Fittingly, they didn’t make a peep on the waiver wire the day after 53-man rosters were announced around the NFL.

Players who were waived Tuesday all became available Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. Dallas time through the league’s waiver process. Teams interested in a player make a claim; the highest-ranking team on the waiver wire order gets him.

The Cowboys didn’t pick up a single player on waivers, but they didn’t lose anyone they had let go, either, and they have already started adding some of them back to the practice squad for 2022.

Former Jets offensive tackle Chuma Edoga was seen by many observers as a potential target for the Cowboys, who are considered to be dangerously thin after a hamstring injury sidelined eight-time Pro Bowler Tyron Smith. His absence is causing a ripple effect across the O-line that has yet to be settled.

Edoga, a former third-round draft pick, was the subject of a trade rumor involving Dallas and the Jets on Monday, but no deal was reached. Edoga was waived on Tuesday, leading some to believe that the Cowboys would try to secure his rights on Wednesday.

But once the claims were processed, Edoga went to the Falcons with the 8th-highest waiver priority.

Dallas had held the 24th priority; it’s not immediately known if they submitted any claims at all. The only teams lower in the order who made successful claims were the 49ers and Bengals. So all that can be said for sure is that the Cowboys didn’t put in a claim for any player that went to one of those clubs.

Alex Leatherwood, who had been waived by the Raiders and was also seen as a possible option for the Cowboys, was claimed by Chicago, with the 7th slot.

With waivers complete, the Cowboys quickly began building their practice squad with some of the players they waived on Tuesday.

Running back Malik Davis, wide receivers Brandon Smith and Dontario Drummond, center Alec Lindstrom, and defensive and Mike Tafua are among the earliest known returning prospects, according to Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News.
