Cleveland Browns quarterback Josh McCown’s trade market just went up with the recent injury to the Dallas Cowboys Kellen Moore.

The Dallas Cowboys lost veteran back-up quarterback Kellen Moore to injury this week. Normally losing a back-up isn’t headline news, but given the injury history of Tony Romo the team could be looking to upgrade that position rather than just handing it to rookie Dak Prescott. One name that is starting to emerge as a possible target for the Cowboys is Cleveland Browns veteran quarterback Josh McCown, but according to ESPN’s Ed Werder, the Browns may be reluctant to trade him.

After a deal was reached between Ryan Fitzpatrick and the New York Jets, the market for McCown lessened significantly. This injury to Moore breathes new life into McCown’s trade value. Even if the Browns are reluctant to move McCown, they should at least answer the phone if Dallas calls.

The Browns and Cowboys are in two completely different places right now. The Cowboys are looking to compete for the NFC East title, and the Browns are in a complete rebuild. Last year when the Cowboys lost Romo the team struggled. The Cowboys would be wise to try and lock up McCown as an insurance policy to avoid a similar situation this season. McCown was impressive for the Browns in 2015, throwing for 12 touchdowns to just four interceptions while completing nearly 64% of his passes. McCown would be an upgrade over what the Cowboys have now and even what they had before in Moore. McCown is a Texas native and I am sure he would not mind wrapping up his career in his home state.

On the other hand the Browns may be rebuilding, but McCown’s presence is still of value. McCown is at the point in his career where he is taking on a type of player coach role with the team. Though on the field the Cowboys may have a larger need for McCown, the Browns may be more interested in what he provides off the field. Robert Griffin III is noted to not be the greatest mentor in the past, so giving Kessler someone who embraces that role could be more valuable to the Browns than a late round draft pick. Should Griffin III get injured this season Cleveland may be more inclined to turn it over to McCown than to throw Kessler in, especially if it is early in the year.

There are arguments for keeping McCown around and trading him away. Whatever Cleveland’s plans with McCown entail, hopefully they answer the phone when the Cowboys call to see how much Dallas is willing to spend on a Romo insurance policy.
