Cowboys News: Jerry says he’s ‘all in’, Prescott out of Pro Bowl, Romo to get broadcast award

Jerry and Stephen Jones found hot microphones in Mobile, so Cowboys Nation now has plenty to talk about. In this edition of News and Notes, we’ll dissect what Jerry had to say about his immensely expensive quarterback and whether “pretty good” has become “good enough” when it comes to the team. He says he’s “all in” for 2024, but what does that actually mean… and what might it look like in someone else’s hands? As for Stephen, he knows fans are frustrated, so why is he invoking names like Brady and Mahomes?

Meanwhile, we’ll detail some late changes to the Pro Bowl roster: three Cowboys are in, and two others are out. We’ve got a new mock draft that may turn a few heads at quarterback, we’re rewinding to the best catches of the Cowboys’ season, and we’re flashing back to one of the most influential teams of all time. Find out what Markquese Bell had to say about being an example for today’s HBCU players, and ignore the Tony Romo slander- the CBS analyst is actually getting a prestigious broadcasting honor.

The Cowboys owner again pointed to the Cowboys’ regular-season success under McCarthy as reason for keeping him in place for a fifth season. “Now, he’s come up short three times in advancing us in the playoffs. But I like the fact that he’s hanging around the rim,” Jones said. “We’re not getting the ball in, but we’re hanging around the rim.” The basketball analogy is sure to land like a brick with Cowboys fans.

The Cowboys EVP said fans’ frustrations over a third straight early playoff exit are warranted, and he seemed to point the finger at Dak Prescott. “There’s no way they’re going to explicitly trust you until you get it done. Would someone trust Tom Brady and the Patriots that they’re going to get it done? Yeah. Why? Because they did it year in and year out. Does someone trust [Patrick] Mahomes and Kansas City that they’re going to do it? Why? Because they do it six years in a row; they’re in the championship game. Until we compete at that level and we get the job done, then there’s going to be doubt.”

The quote of the day was from the Cowboys owner, telling reporters, “we will be all in” for 2024. “I would say that you will see us this coming year, not build it for the future,” he explained. He went on to describe a need to “disrupt” in some areas- like free agency- in order to have better success in the short term, but also said that Prescott “has done nothing” to change his mind about giving him an extension as Cowboys quarterback.

A former video producer at DallasCowboys.com recently told a story on a podcast about Jones once completely blowing off calls from the Detroit Lions concerning a proposed trade that would have sent “a pretty decent name” to Dallas. Jones didn’t consult with anyone else and may not have even known who the player was. Cowboys Nation, predictably, freaked out.

This mock has Dallas giving up the 24th pick to get three more selections. To end the first round, they grab Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr., with an eye toward handing him the reigns in 2025. Then they trade up in the second to get highly-regarded Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson. There’s more movement in later rounds, but the Cowboys come away with two more O-linemen, two linebackers, another big defensive tackle, and a nifty running back to (hopefully) pair with a veteran workhorse in free agency.
