Court of Dreams: Elco basketball teams will play at Philadelpha's Wells Fargo Center

On Monday, Dec. 18, the Elco boys' and girls' basketball teams will face off with Wyomissing at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia as part of the Court of Dreams Experience that is offered by the Philadelphia 76ers.

“It (the Court of Dreams Experience) was always something on my radar on this job to do for our basketball teams,” Elco athletic director Tommy Mealy said.

“There is a big 76ers following here at Elco, and I decided to pursue this in November by reaching out to the 76ers front office. From there, the stars just really aligned with the date and timing,” Mealy said. “Thankfully, our programs, school administration and the Wyomissing Area School District was also fully supportive and on board as well.”

The games are scheduled for 1:05 and 2:35 p.m. tips with the girls' game first.

Following the girls' and boys' games in the afternoon, the teams and communities will be guests for the NBA game later that evening between the 76ers and visiting Chicago Bulls.

The action on the court should be good as both the Elco girls and Wyomissing girls are 4-0 as of Wednesday. The Spartans were the District 3 Class 4A champions last year and advanced all the way to the state quarterfinals while the Raiders were the first team out in Class 4A after a furious run down the stretch to try to qualify.

Wyomissing returns four starters from last year's championship squad: senior Annie McCaffrey and juniors Amaya Stewart, Alexis Hardy and Audrey Hurleman. They’ve won their four contests this year by an average of 28 points with Stewart, a returning first-team all-state player in Class 4A, leading the way with an 18 points per game average.

Elco, also with four starters returning, features a balanced offensive attack with sophomore Kenzie Eckhart (13 PPG) and senior Makenna Seifert (12 PPG) averaging double digits as well as senior Sara Miller and sophomore Maddie Stout averaging eight apiece. The Raiders have won their games this season by an average of 23 points.

The boys game has a much different look to it. Because of a lengthy football run, Wyomissing has yet to play a game as of Wednesday with their first game scheduled for Friday at Schuylkill Valley. Elco, meanwhile, has raced out to a 3-1 start.

The Spartans, 8-14 last year, return their top three scorers from a year ago in Alex Campbell (8.7 PPG, 39 3-pointers), Andrew Forrey (7.9 PPG) and Dylan Latourelle (7.1 PPG).

The Raiders return three starters from last year's team: seniors Camden Marquette, Dallas George and Logan Kless. Junior Micah Gray was a heavily used rotation player last year and leads the team in scoring this year with just under 14 points per game.
