Could the Grant Williams era of the Boston Celtics be coming to an end?

Could the Grant Williams era of the Boston Celtics be coming to an end? An easy-to-miss blurb in Kevin O’Connor’s latest iteration of his 2023 draft guide reported that “the Celtics are exploring ways to bolster the roster, whether it’s a sign-and-trade involving Grant Williams during free agency or something consolidating their plethora of guards”.

It’s unclear whether the scoop here is just that Boston is working to upgrade their roster (we would hope so, given their designs on a title) or if O’Connor has heard the Celtics have been looking to use a Williams sign-and-trade specifically, and not just as one of the range of options available to the ball club given their current situation.

Boston is widely seen as likely to have an active offseason as they prepare their roster for another run at an NBA title — but also in the context of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, which was created to be punitive to expensive ball clubs like the Celtics.

Whether Boston elects to use Williams in a deal to one or both ends remains to be seen, but should certainly be considered a realistic tool for the Celtics to use if they find the right trade target to get better, cheaper — or both.
