Copan Hornets beat Bluejacket in basketball tourney; Lady Hornets lose by 3 points

The majority of area high school basketball teams are tournament-bound this week, with Copan and Nowata both hosting tournaments Dec. 4-9.

The Copan Hornets improved to (5-1) on the season with a 50-36 win over Bluejacket in the Copan Tournament on Dec. 4. They will play Quapaw on Thursday at 8:30 p.m.

“It will be a big game for us on Thursday as we try to avenge our only loss (to Bluejacket) earlier in the season,” said Copan Hornet head Coach Kolton Stacy. “And we’ll clinch a championship berth in our own tournament."

Copan’s Tryston Easter led all scorers with 17 points. Shooter Brewington, Weston O’Rourke and Logan Guess contributed 8 points each.

“We played tough on defense, securing rebounds and possessions when we needed to,” said Stacy.

In the other boy’s game, Quapaw defeated Foyil 55-40.

The Copan Lady Hornets fell just short of Foyil, losing 38-35. They will be back in action on Thursday at 4 p.m. when they face Bluejacket.

Copan was down 9 points at the half and came back to cut the lead to two, but was unable to take the lead.

“We still need to work on being disciplined in running offenses,” said Copan Lady Hornet head coach Kristy Bryan. “They gave 100 % effort, but we need to get better looks and not rush our shots.”

Kaylee Woodworth scored 14 points for the Lady Hornets, followed by Elyzabeth Odum with 12 points.

In the other girl’s game, Quapaw defeated Bluejacket, 67-34.

The Copan Tournament continues Tuesday when the Barnsdall Lady Panthers battle with Prue at 4 p.m., while the Panthers take on Prue at 5:30 p.m. The South Coffeyville Lady Lions tangle with CVD at 7 p.m. and the Panthers clash with CVD at 8:30 p.m.

Nowata is hosting the annual Ty Hewitt Memorial Tournament. On Monday, both Oklahoma Union teams lost their games. The Lady Cougars lost to Mannford 55-15 while the Cougars fell to Fairland 63-49.

Other scores included the Mannford boys defeating Chelsea, 50-28 and Oologah girls taking Fairland, 48-26.

On Tuesday, Nowata takes to their own court at 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. with both teams facing Rejoice Christian.

Dewey is playing in the Adair Tournament, while Wesleyan Christian School is at Frontier.
