New contract makes IU's Teri Moren among nation's highest-paid women's basketball coaches

After a historic season, Indiana University and women's basketball coach Teri Moren have agreed to an extended contract through 2029.

Moren, the reigning Associated Press National Coach of the Year, will make more than $1.3 million per year, which ranks second in the Big Ten. The move will also put Moren among the highest-paid women's basketball coaches in the country, according to a release from IU.

The contract was extended by two years and includes performance bonuses for winning the regular season and postseason league titles, finishing in the top three of the Big Ten in the regular season, making the NCAA tournament and winning games there, plus being recognized as the conference and/or national coach of the year.

"I am honored and humbled to receive a contract extension from Indiana University," Moren said. "I am incredibly proud of what we have been able to build during our time at IU which is a direct reflection of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and fans who have all played a big part in our success. I am excited for what’s happening in the future of our program. A very heartfelt thank you to President Whitten and Scott Dolson for their support and their trust in me to lead this program for the long term. I am proud to be a Hoosier."

This past season, Moren was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year for the second time.

"Teri Moren has clearly established herself as one of the nation’s best basketball coaches, and in doing so has elevated Indiana Women’s Basketball to an unprecedented level in our program’s history," athletic director Dolson said in the release. "The decision to modify her contract not only recognizes the tremendous successes she has enjoyed during her nine years here, but also Indiana University’s commitment to continuing to elevate IU Women’s Basketball into one of the best programs in the sport."

In nine seasons at IU, Moren is the program's all-time winningest coach with a 200-93 record (99-57 in the Big Ten). The Hoosiers have won at least 20 games for eight straight seasons.

Indiana posted a 28-4 overall record in 2022-23 and won its first Big Ten regular season championship in 40 years. It also earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament for the first time. IU has made the NCAA tournament on five occasions during Moren's tenure and has won at least one game in each appearance. The program also won the Women's NIT in 2018.

Besides on-court success, IU has also experienced significant growth in fan attendance during Moren's time. Indiana averaged 2,708 fans per game the year prior to Moren's arrival. This past season, the average attendance at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall reached an all-time best of 8,104 fans per game. That figure ranked second in the Big Ten and in the top 10 nationally.

Because of that success, IU added a new reserved ticket option for the 2023-24 season.
