Contract details for Bills QB Kyle Allen

Kyle Allen is the Buffalo Bills’ newest backup quarterback… as long as he earns that.

Allen, 27, is likely to be a backup to Josh Allen once the 2023 season rolls along. At this point, all he has to avoid is being terrible, but if that does happen, even the Bills still can get out of his deal in a hurry.

It was initially announced that Allen signed a one-year deal in Buffalo. The terms of that deal can be described in a few words: Veteran minimum.

Per Spotrac, that’s what Allen is earning in his contract. His base salary of $1.080 million is the vet minimum for a player with five years of experience in the league.

In terms of guarantees, Allen earns $350,000 of those and a $100,000 signing bonus.

But as mentioned, Allen still can’t just stink up the joint. The Bills will want to know they have a capable No. 2 quarterback.

If things sour in a hurry, Buffalo would only have a $350,000 dead-cap hit to deal with.

Having said that, the reality of the situation is that Allen’s on a one-year contract. If he proves his worth, there’s likely a world where Buffalo re-signs him in the future.

It’s long been known that he’s good friends with Josh Allen, which is what made him an attractive piece to have.

Many outsiders often just look at the Xs and Os of the game. Does Allen make sense as a second-stringer on the field? He’ll have a chance to prove that in the preseason, but the overwhelming narrative is yes, his personality is going to fit right in and that is important… and if that doesn’t cost too much? Even better.
