A recap and roundup of Week 7 high school football action in San Angelo and the Concho Valley.
Key Outcomes
Brady 38, TLCA San Angelo 18
Brady (2-4, 1-0) got back on track just in time for district play. The Bulldogs rushed the ball 40 times for 257 yards against the Eagles (3-3, 0-1) who - up until yesterday - looked like the second-best team in District 2-3A Division II. The Bulldogs' defense, led by first-year coach Jaron Roberts, held an efficient TLCA San Angelo offense scoreless for three quarters.
This game was an opportunity for the Eagles to cement themselves as one of the best teams in the district, but they failed to capitalize on their opportunity with Brady and Early in down years.
With the win, Brady breathed life into its race for a playoff spot after a less-than-ideal 1-4 start to the season.
Sonora 49, Ozona 38
In quarterback Jaime Buitron's second game back from injury, he helped lead Sonora (6-0, 1-0) to a hard-fought win over an explosive Ozona (2-4, 0-1) offense.
Buitron finished the game completing an efficient 9 of 15 passes for 214 yards and four touchdowns, while star running back Edgar DeLuna rushed 25 times for 257 yards and two touchdowns. DeLuna also tacked on nine tackles, two tackles for a loss, and two forced fumbles, while defensive lineman Jaedon Chavarria had two of the team's three sacks.
For the Lions, this game showed they could score with any team; however, quarterback Hudson Fowler again struggled with turnovers, throwing four interceptions. Freshman running back Nolan Martinez got the start for the Lions. He had 22 carries for 94 yards and two touchdowns and could be a player on whom the Lions rely more later down the road.
Junction 43, Stockdale 41
The Eagles (5-2, 1-0) proved they are a contender in District 14-2A Division I with a 45-42 overtime win over Stockdale (4-2, 0-1). Last year, Junction lost 56-6 to the Brahmas, who finished second in the district behind Mason. The Eagles successfully turned their program around just one year after finishing 2-8 and fourth in the district.
Quarterback Chasen Doyal had his best game of the season, completing 13 of 22 passes for 135 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Aidan Cardwell also had his best game after rushing 17 times for 123 yards and two touchdowns while also hauling in three touchdown passes.
Sterling City 54, McCamey 20
Just one and a half years removed from six-man football, the Eagles (5-1, 2-0) established themselves as a contender with No. 9 Wink for the top spot in District 5-2A Divison II.
Sterling City followed up a 41-14 win over Water Valley with a more impressive win over McCamey, who finished second in the district over the Eagles last year. The Eagles ground game struggled to move the ball, but quarterback Ty Turner completed 9 of 13 passes for 189 yards and five touchdowns for his best game of the season.
Other Notes
All the San Angelo teams dropped their first district matchups this week in what is turning out to be a tough year for high school football in the city, with TLCA San Angelo the only team at .500 this season.
Richland Springs is back. With the 40-32 win over last year's district champion Cherokee, the Coyotes (7-0, 1-0) kept themselves in the playoff race with surprise powerhouse Rochelle in District 16-A Division II.
Forsan silenced all the talk about not being a top dog in District 3-2A Division I with a 42-12 rout on the road over Reagan County. The Owls (4-2, 0-1) need to get healthy and find a more consistent run game if they want to compete in their district.
Miles looked completely overwhelmed in its 41-0 loss to the reigning Class 2A Division II state champion No. 1 Albany Lions on Friday. The good news for the Bulldogs (4-2, 0-1), every other team who faced the Lions (5-0, 1-0) also faced the same outcome this season.
Tolar continued to tear through its 2023 schedule with a 43-0 dismantling of Coleman. The Bluecats (5-2, 2-1) struggled to run the football, and new starting quarterback Brayden Torres tossed two interceptions in the loss.
