Compensation, salary cap details for Panthers’ trade of WR Robbie Anderson

When Robbie Anderson was booted from Sunday’s game by interim head coach Steve Wilks, it was apparent that his time with the Carolina Panthers was coming to a close. It also seemed obvious that if the seventh-year wideout were to be traded, that the organization would be lucky to get anything back in return.

Well, that actually happened on Monday.

Following three eventful seasons in Carolina, Anderson was shipped off to the Arizona Cardinals. The initial reports on the deal, including the official release from the team itself, were vague in terms of compensation for the receiver—even classifying the return as “some future draft capital.”

But, not too long after the news, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed the details. Headed back to the Panthers will be two future pieces of draft capital—a 2024 sixth-round pick and 2025 seventh-round pick.

Luckily for Carolina, they found themselves a desperate buyer in Arizona. The Cardinals just lost a key vertical threat of their own, as Marquise Brown sustained a season-ending foot injury in the Week 6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Unluckily for Carolina, however, they’ll still be on the hook for a massive amount of dead cap money thanks to Anderson’s two-year extension he inked last summer. While they do save $690,000 for 2022, the Panthers will have to take on a total hit of $19.4 million over the next two seasons.
