Who should the Colts re-sign when free agency begins

Jack Doyle

In a perfect world the Indianapolis Colts could re-sign any of their 12 pending free agents (leaving out Robert Mathis after he retired).

Here is a list of every Colts player that hits the open market next month when free agency begins.

Mike Adams- S

Darius Butler- CB

Hugh Thorton- OL

Erik Walden- OLB

Robert Turbin- RB

Jordan Todman- RB

Jack Doyle- TE

Chris Carter- OLB

Jonotthan Harrison- OL

Zach Kerr- DL

Josh McNary- OLB

But the reality is that the Colts will not be able to bring everyone back. Nor would they like to. You can expect Carter, Harrison, Thorton, Todman and McNary to not return in 2017.

Kerr provides depth playing behind David Parry, but would only be worth a one year deal around $3 million.

Robert Turbin has expressed the desire to return, and gives the Colts a solid retrun man. However he will likely be a wait and see type player. Ballard will address the running back depth in the draft. So for now Turbin is playing the waiting game.

As for Butler and Adams, you should expect both to return in 2017. Butler has been one of the most consistent corners behind Vontae Davis over the last few years. He is a solid slot corner, or he could transition to safety this season. “Pop” Adams should also be brought back.

All Adams has done over the last three seasons in Indianapolis is create turnovers. He was one of the few great free agent signings by Ryan Grigson. His leadership alone is worth a small two year deal and he can continue to provide depth with Clayton Geathers and the experiment that has been TJ Green.

That leaves just Doyle left. If he would have hit the open market last season we would not be having this conversation. But Doyle had a breakout season last year with 59 catches.

Expect some teams to throw some money at Doyle. Anything over $16 million and you might have to watch the Colts let him go. Even with over $50 million in cap space, the Colts have to be patient in who they re-sign.

One thing is for sure however, this will be an interesting offseason.
