College women's hockey: St. Lawrence pounces early, wins nonleague clash with RIT

Oct. 20—CANTON — First-period goals from Suyeon Eom and Abby Hustler proved enough for St. Lawrence University to claim a nonleague victory over Rochester Institute of Technology, 2-1, on Thursday night in a women's hockey game at Appleton Arena.

Eom recorded a goal off a rebound from a shot by Rachel Bjorgan at 9 minutes, 56 minutes into the first period. Hustler scored 4:49 later from the left circle off a pass from Aly McLeod.

The Saints outshot the Tigers 16-5 in the first period.

RIT (4-3-2) scored its goal 10:59 into the third period when Nicole Ness deflected a shot in the slot past SLU goaltender Emma-Sofie Nordstrom. RIT pulled goalie Sarah Coe twice for the extra skater but penalties forced her back into the net as the Tigers failed to tie the game.

Nordstrom stopped 18 shots and Coe made 37 saves. The Saints held a 39-19 shot advantage.

St. Lawrence (6-1) does not play again until Oct. 27 when it opens ECAC Hockey play with a home game against Princeton.
