College roundup: SUNY Potsdam's Singh named SUNYAC men's basketball Athletic of Week
Jan. 8—POTSDAM — SUNY Potsdam's Kawar Singh grabbed SUNYAC Athlete of the Week honors for his outings last weekend against Buffalo State and Fredonia.
Singh, a 6-foot-8 junior, recorded his first double-double of the season, compiling 10 points and a career-high 20 rebounds in Potsdam's 77-60 victory over Buffalo State. He added four blocks.
Against Fredonia, Singh added another double-double with a career-high 13 points and 20 rebounds with three blocks.
Singh, from Queens, is fifth in SUNYAC in rebounds per game with 7.2.
BURNS HONORED BY LEAGUE
Clarkson freshman Braeden Burns landed Liberty League Rookie of the Week honors after a strong performance last week.
Burns, from Jamesville, averaged 17.3 points and 7.0 rebounds over three games, shooting 51.2 percent. He scored 20 of his 28 points against SUNY Canton in the second half. He scored 12 points apiece against Bard and Vassar.
Burns is sixth in the Liberty League in scoring with 14.2 points-per game. He's seventh in rebound at 6.5 and sixth in field goal percentage (47.3 percent).
—Lowville's Aidan Macaulay, a junior at St. Lawrence University, was named to the Liberty League honorable mention list for his performance last week in men's basketball.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
PABO REPEATS AS ROOKIE OF WEEK
Freshman Sierra Pabo of SUNY Canton was named the North Atlantic Conference's Rookie of the Week on Monday for the fourth time this season.
Pabo averaged 18.5 points per game over the Kangaroos' two games last week. She added 4 rebounds per contest and 2.5 assist and 2 steals per game. She struck for a career-high 27 points during SUNY Canton's 106-35 victory over VTSU Johnson on Friday.
FLYNN RECOGNIZED BY LEAGUE
St. Lawrence University freshman Elizabeth Flynn was named the Liberty League rookie of the week after recording a pair of double-doubles during the weekend.
Flynn, from Brentwood, Tenn., struck for 14 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Saints against Bard in a victory Saturday. She finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds in a loss to Vassar on Friday.
HOCKEY
HOEHN NAMED ATHLETE OF WEEK
SUNY Potsdam sophomore Mason Hoehn received SUNYAC men's hockey Athlete of the Week honors for his performance last weekend.
Hoehn compiled three points in the Bears' two-game sweep of Saint Michael's on the road. He contributed an assist in a 5-2 victory Friday and then scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, in Potsdam's 3-2 win Saturday.
Hoehn sits second on the team in scoring with eight points. He's tied on the team with goals scored with five.
FOOTBALL
SU PROMOTES JOHNSON
Syracuse announced that receivers coach Michael Johnson will stay with the Orange as the team's co-Offensive Coordinator and tight ends coach.
"Mike Johnson has been a coordinator before and worked with several teams in the NFL. Having his mind here is great," SU head coach Fran Brown said. "He has the opportunity to coach one of the best players on our entire team in Oronde Gadsden II and we have a freshman coming in who I think is going to be another really, really good football player, in Jamie Tremble. I'm excited he decided to stay and I want people to understand and know that it's important that he's here on our staff. We have like three coordinators on offense, so that helps a lot."
In Johnson's first season with SU, the team's passing efficiency improved from 108th in the FBS to 45th. SU also improved in the Atlantic Coast Conference in total offense, passing offense and red zone offense.
Johnson previously coached at Florida Atlantic as Co-Offensive Coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
