College roundup: Sparked by combined no-hitter, St. Lawrence sweeps SUNY Canton in softball

Mar. 29—POTSDAM — A combined no-hitter kicked off the day on the right note and Meredith Rose drove in eight runs on the day as the St. Lawrence University softball team swept SUNY Canton, 16-0 and 13-5, on Friday in a nonconference doubleheader.

Isabelle Wilson, Layne Fritz and Olivia Caporale combined on the gem for the Saints in the opening game, which was shortened to five innings because of a mercy rule.

St. Lawrence, which improved to 7-4 on the season, also generated a hot day at the plate, recording 24 hits over the two victories.

Maeve Thompson recorded four hits, including a double, and drove in three runs and Sofia Camillieri singled twice and doubled.

Rose Meredith hit a three-run home run in the first game and also doubled in the nightcap for the Saints, driving in four runs in each game, while Allison Kloft singled twice and knocked in three runs on the day.

Elly Cunningham homered, singled and drove in two runs in the second game for SUNY Canton (0-4) and Andrea Cary doubled and singled.

JEFFERSON CC 5-5, ONONDAGA CC 3-9

The Cannoneers opened their season by splitting a doubleheader with the Lazers in Mid-State Athletic Conference play in Watertown.

Delaney Wiley pitched the win for Jefferson CC in the first game. Kiannah Ward hit a home run for JCC in Game 2.

BASEBALL

RIT 6, CLARKSON 1

For the second time in three games, the Golden Knights were limited to only one run, this time in a loss to the Tigers in a Liberty League game in Potsdam.

Trent Rapp hit a solo home run in the third inning for Rochester Institute of Technology (8-9, 3-0), Charlie Slaymaker doubled and singled, and Jarin Moses, Kyle Poorman and Gil Merod each singled twice.

Clarkson (7-6, 0-3) was held to four hits in the games, including doubles from Robert Fratangelo and Aidan Kuefner, with Quinn Maslowski generating an RBI single.

ITHACA 14, ST. LAWRENCE 8

Ryan Laubscher belted a two-run home run, singled and drove in four runs and Louis Fabbo hit a two-run home run of his home run to propel the Bombers past the Saints in a Liberty League game played in Canton.

Colin Shashaty chipped in with a double and singled twice for Ithaca (11-4, 3-0).

John Gannon connected on a three-run home run for St. Lawrence (6-8, 1-3) in its home opener, and Jackson Brinker and Timothy Connor each doubled and singled, while Willie Landman and Sean Desjardins each singled twice.

HUDSON VALLEY CC 10-2, JEFFERSON CC 0-1

The Vikings swept a doubleheader from the Cannoneers in Region III play on Thursday in Watertown.

Jeremy Taggart went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs in the first game for Hudson Valley Community College (13-1) and Brendan Connolly also singled twice and knocked in a run.

In the nightcap, Connor Waiting connected on a two-run home run for the Vikings, who recorded their 12th consecutive win.

Joshua Matteson singled twice during the first game of the day for JCC (5-5) and Ashton Brea doubled in the second game.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL

SUNY POTSDAM 3, BARD 0

On their senior day, the Bears swept the Raptors to win an NEVC encounter in Potsdam, 25-21, 25-22 and 25-18.

Before the match, SUNY Potsdam honored seniors Michael Anderson, Sam Day, Cam McGarry, Sean Murray, Zaire Rogers and Tom Shemik.

Duncan Tenhagen paced the Bears (11-12, 2-4) with 16 kills, two aces and seven digs, Matt Kilinski totaled 12 kills, an ace and two blocks, while Murray added five kills and a block and Anderson tallied 36 assists and seven digs.
