College Roundup: Siena Heights football wins on homecoming

Siena Heights treated its homecoming fans to a thrilling 24-21 victory over Taylor University on Saturday as David Medvedik made a 31-yard field goal with no time left on the clock.

“We put David in that position every week in practice,” SHU (3-3, 1-2 MSFA East) coach Matt Kohn said. “He was prepared, confident and made a huge play.”

The winning kick was set up by a 51-yard run by Ethan LoPresto, who got out of bounds with :01 left on the clock.

LoPresto couldn’t see the time on the scoreboard because of the direction he was running, but he had enough awareness to not get tackled in the field of play.

“He was aware of the time, but the fact that there was only one second (left) was pure luck,” Kohn said.

The long run topped off a great day by LoPresto, who finished with 181 yards rushing and two touchdowns, and caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Elijah Taylor.

LoPresto led the Saints offense, which compiled a season-high 473 yards. Taylor had 236 yards passing. Jordan Ramsey added 67 yards on the ground. Credell Prather had four catches for 102 yards.

Taylor went up early 7-0, but LoPresto’s touchdown reception tied the game on the next drive. LoPresto scored again before the first quarter was over for a 14-7 SHU lead, but Taylor tied it before halftime on a 14-yard run by Damon Hockett.

In the fourth quarter, LoPresto scored on a 45-yard run with 11:15 left but Taylor responded quickly with a 25-yard touchdown run by Stephen Ellis.

SHU took over with 21 seconds left at its own 30. After two straight incompletions by Taylor, LoPresto had his long run to the Taylor 19. Taylor was then called for an offside penalty, moving the ball closer, and Medvedik was good from 31 yards out.

“I’m just very proud of the way all of our coaches and players stuck together and never gave up,” Kohn said.

Medvedik is 2 for 2 on field goal attempts this season.

LoPresto’s big day pushed his season per-game average to 101.2 yards.

SHU is on the road next week, playing at Concordia in Ann Arbor.

Taylor falls to 1-6. Lenawee Christian graduate Hutson Hohlbein caught two passes for 16 yards for Taylor on Saturday.

Kalamazoo also returned a fumble for a touchdown in the second quarter as it took a 24-7 lead into the half with the Bulldogs' lone score coming on a Tejay Moore 53-yard touchdown. Darrick Price added 3-yard touchdown run and Mark Lopez had a 5-yard touchdown pass to Keontae Townsend.

Lopez finished 20-of-34 passing for 202 yards and a touchdown while Moore rushed for 123 yards and Tyler Poirier rushed for 68. Townsend had eight receptions for 84 yards while Cole Seslar caught a pass for 55 yards.
