College roundup: Goslings selected for Canadian national team for worlds in Utica

Mar. 12—Cousins Julia Gosling of St. Lawrence University and Nicole Gosling of Clarkson University have each been selected to the Canadian National Women's Team that will compete in the International Ice Hockey Federation's Women's World Championship next month in Utica.

Julia Gosling has recorded 22 goals and 29 assists for 51 points this season and struck for nine power-play goals for the Saints, who are 27-10 entering their NCAA Tournament first-round game Thursday against Penn State in Madison, Wis.

Nicole Gosling leads Clarkson with 37 points on 14 goals and 23 assists, also with nine goals on the power play. The Golden Knights (32-4-2) are seeded No. 4 in the NCAA Tournament and will host No. 5 Minnesota in a second-round game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cheel Arena.

Both Goslings are making their first appearances in world competition.

Other players on Canada's world team with area connections are former Clarkson player Jaime Lee Rattray, Renata Fast, Ella Shelton and Erin Ambrose

The World Championship is a 10-team tournament, featuring the host United States, Canada, Finland, Czechia, Switzerland, China, Denmark, Germany, Japan and Sweden.

Canada will face its rival, the United States on April 8. Canada begins with Finland on April 4. The United States starts play April 3 against Switzerland.

The United States' world hockey roster is not expected to be revealed until March 31, after a national team evaluation camp March 27-30 in Lake Placid.

WOMEN'S LACROSSE

SUNY POTSDAM 12, SUNY MORRISVILLE 8

The Bears scored the first four goals of the second half to take control of the game and go on to the victory in their season-opener at Morrisville.

Anita Reitano scored six goals for Potsdam. Lindsay LaDue and Mallory Marks each scored two goals. Megan MacWilliams and Abby Kraus added one each.

Maddie Baum scored three goals for the Mustangs (0-4). Anyssia Ingersoll and Alexa Ringgold added two goals each.

SUNY BROCKPORT 12, ST. LAWRENCE 10

Brockport answered St. Lawrence's five-goal third quarter with five goals in the fourth to claim the nonleague victory in Brockport.

Tristan Davis and Alayna Foos each scored two goals in the Golden Eagles' five-goal surge to turn an 8-7 deficit at the start of the fourth into victory. Davis finished with four goals and assist overall and Foos scored three times total.

Cassidy Burnash added one of her two goals in the fourth quarter and also had an assist. Julia Quinlan contributed two goals and an assist and Hailey Lewkowich a goal an assist for Brockport (2-3).

Neve Ley paced the Saints with four goals and an assist. Liz Evans added two goals and an assist and Jessica LaPlaca totaled a goal and two assists for SLU (0-3). Ellie Camp, Bella Hillman and Phoebe Spaeth scored a goal each.

MEN'S LACROSSE

SUNY POTSDAM 19, VTSU-CASTLETON 6

Senior Cobie Cree, a former Salmon River athlete, scored a career-high six goals as SUNY Potsdam rolled past Vermont State University-Castleton in a nonleague game in Castleton, Vt.

Midfielder Peyton Walsh added two goals and four assists for Potsdam, moving up to ninth in program history in scoring and sixth in total goals.

Ryan Hughes supplied four goals and an assist and Owen Walsh a goal and four assists for the Bears (3-1).

BASEBALL

MT. ST. MARY'S 15, SUNY CANTON 5

Noah Anderson hit a triple and home run and drove in four runs as Mount St. Mary's defeated SUNY Canton in the first of two games for the Kangaroos in Davenport, Fla.

Tyler Van De Bogart and Luke Barone each added a double and an RBI and Adam Leone and Elijah Duprey each drove in two runs for the Knights (2-8), who scored 10 runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to break open a 5-5 game.

Eliezer Vazquez doubled twice for SUNY Canton and Nick Barone added a double and an RBI. Frank Nieto drove in two runs.

ST. SCHOLASTICA 21, SUNY CANTON 4

Mitchell Novak homered and drove in five runs and Jack Schelonka homered and drove in four as St. Scholastica scored at least one run in every inning except the first to beat SUNY Canton in Davenport, Fla.

Levi Stubbles and Kyle Oswald also hit home runs for St. Scholastica (6-1).

Eliezer Vazquez and Nick Barone each doubled for SUNY Canton (0-10). Barone added two RBIs and Vazquez one.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

DUDZINSKI, MILES-FERGUSON HONORED

St. Lawrence sophomore Adam Dudzinski and Clarkson graduate student Ryan Miles-Ferguson each were named to the National Association of Baseball Coaches' all-region second team.

Dudzinski averaged 15.3 points per game and 6.3 rebounds for the Saints. He led the team in total 3-pointers with 61. Miles-Ferguson's 21.4 ppg led the Liberty League. He also led the league in field goals made and free throws made and was second in total 3-pointers.

Miles-Ferguson was also named to the Division III Region 3 first team by D3Hoops.com. Dudzinski was named to D3Hoops.com's third team.
