Coldwater cross country invades Turkeyville for Interstate 8 conference championship

MARSHALL – The Coldwater Cardinal cross country program traveled to Turkeyville in Marshall on Saturday for the Interstate 8 conference championship.

In the boys’ race the Cardinals finished in fifth place as a team with 143 points. Marshall ran away with the conference crown with a score of 29 points, followed by Parma Western in second place with 49 points. Harper Creek finished in third, followed by Hastings, Coldwater, Northwest and Pennfield.

Coldwater was led on the day by senior James DeWitt who made a strong charge through the middle portion of the race to finish in 20th place in a time of 17 minutes, 55.8 seconds.

Rounding out the Cardinal scoring was Drew Vandepuyl in 25th place in a time of 18:01.9; Luke Aerts in 27th place in a time of 18:12.3; Ethan Parker in 40th place in a time of 18:51.4; and Aiden Parker in 44th place in a time of 19:02.7.

Finishing out the Cardinal effort was Umari Umari in 45th; Hunter Barnett in 47th; Wail Abdullah in 56th; Talan Doll in 70th; Ben Uetrecht in 76th; and Kaleb Miller in 82nd.

In the girls race the Cardinals were led by freshman Ella Grabowski who finished in 46th place in a time of 26:02.4 while Elizabeth Ojeda finished in 62nd place in a time of 28:35.7.

The Coldwater girls did not field enough runners to qualify for the team standings. Parma Western won the conference title on a tiebreaker over Harper Creek, as both teams finished the day with 49 points. The tiebreaker for the event was the placement of each team’s sixth runner, with Parma’s sixth runner, Luna Canziani, finishing in 17th place while Harper Creek’s sixth runner, Ellie Feneley, finished in 19th place.

Marshall finished in third place, followed by Hastings and Northwest. Neither Pennfield nor Coldwater qualified for the team standings.

Coldwater will return to action on Saturday when they travel to Portage West Middle School for the Division Two Regional 13 tournament.
