Coachella Valley's Angelica Villarreal, shown here competing in the girls' triple jump in Indio, Calif. on April 26, 2023, set the new school record and the 2024 DVL finals on Thursday.

Angelica Villarreal won the long jump and broke her own school record in the triple jump on Thursday, helping Coachella Valley High School to a dominant day in the field events at the Desert Valley League track finals.

Ernesto Recio, who starred at receiver on the Arabs’ football team, captured first in the boys’ high jump and long jump, and Ivan Camargo, another Coachella Valley High football player, won the boys’ triple jump to give the school five first place finishes in the six jumping events.

Recio was named the DVL MVP for boys’ field events, which was held at Twentynine Palms High.

Villarreal, who was awarded the DVL MVP award for girls’ field events, recorded a distance of 34 feet and 5.5 inches in the triple jump to break the record that she set (33-09) earlier this season. Villarreal originally broke it at the Saddle Up Invitational at Vista Murrieta, then broke it again at the Inland Empire Championships with a distance of 33 feet and 9.5 inches.

Villarreal then broke the record for a third time at a dual meet a week ago, reaching 34 feet. Prior to this year, the Coachella Valley High girls’ triple jump record had stood for 27 years (33-5.25).

Had it not been for Villarreal, teammate Paulina Lucero, a sophomore, would have set the school record on Thursday. Lucero recorded a distance of 33 feet and seven inches in the triple jump, which is the second-best mark in school history and good enough to qualify as an at-large participant in Division I at the CIF Southern Section prelims. To qualify she needed a jump of at least 33 feet.

With Villarreal and Lucero also taking first and second place in the long jump, and teammate Jessica Jordan taking third, this year marks the third consecutive year that Coachella Valley High has swept the top three spots in the long jump.

Recio and Camargo each recorded distances in the long jump that place them in the top 10 on the school’s all-time list. The other eight on the list are from the 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s, according to coach Bill Johnson.

Freshman has a big day

Nevaeh Cardoza, a freshman at Cathedral City High, had an incredible meet. She won the 3,200 meters race by more than a minute, comfortably won the 1,600 and also captured first in the 800.

No other runner won three events in the track portion of the meet.
