Coach Steve Geiman returns to Wilson Memorial as starter of Valley Cup: Video

FISHERSVILLE — On Tuesday, at the Ragged Mountain Valley Cup cross country race, runners and spectators alike got a surprise treat when Steve Geiman, the longtime Wilson Memorial coach, was not only in attendance, but served as the starter.

In August 2022, Geiman suffered a stroke right before the start of the cross country season. When he returned to the Fishersville course that he designed, it marked the one-year anniversary of his stroke.

"An epic moment and such a special way to benchmark the one-year anniversary of having his stroke," said his daughter, Brecken Geiman, who brought her dad to Wilson Tuesday. "He had a great time and definitely recognized some familiar faces from his cross country past. He's certainly making a remarkable recovery."

Brecken Geiman shared some photos from the day and a video of her dad dropping the flag to start the runners. In the video you'll also see Wilson Memorial boys' coach Tripp Franklin standing with Steve Geiman. When he was in high school. Franklin ran for Geiman at Wilson. And delivering the flag to Geiman is Ragged Mountain Running Shop owner Mark Lorenzoni, who, along with his wife Cynthia, sponsored the race. The Lorenzoni's helped create the Valley Cup along with Steve Geiman in 2016.
