Clemson football's Andrew Mukuba may be from Texas but he picks Whataburger over brisket

CLEMSON – While Andrew Mukuba is one of six Clemson football players from Texas, he differs from his home state teammates when it comes to culinary preferences.

While his fellow Texans are bullish on brisket, Mukuba will take a pass.

“I don’t have a problem with brisket – if it’s there I’ll eat it, but I wouldn’t order it,” said Mukuba, a junior safety who will make his 22nd career start when the Tigers open the season Monday night at Duke (8 p.m., ESPN).

Instead, Mukuba says, put him in front of an order board at Whataburger, the fast-food chain that boasts 711 locations in the Lone Star State alone.

“Literally the first thing I grab as soon as I land at the airport is Whataburger,” said Mukuba, who’s one of three Clemson players from Austin. “You can’t go wrong with Whataburger. That’s mandatory once you land in Texas.”

So what is Mukuba’s go-to selection?

“Get you a honey barbecue chicken strip sandwich,” Mukuba said. “That’ll change your life. I wish we had one down here. It would be amazing if we had a Whataburger down here.”

Good news for Mukuba: A new Whataburger – the first one in South Carolina – is planned for nearby Anderson.

So would that be enough to lure Mukuba back for another season with the Tigers and a dream NIL deal?

“You’re not wrong,” Mukuba said. “That’s a big maybe.”
