Class 3A basketball roundup: Copan boys, girls top Barnsdall

Caney Valley High School basketball teams swept onto the court earlier this week with full purpose of desire to open their 2023-24 campaigns.

Meanwhile, Copan boys improved to 4-0 on the season and Wesleyan Christian School boys also flexed their muscles to open what might be a very promising campaign.

Below are summaries of these and other area prep Class 3A-and-smaller schools.

Boys: Caney Valley 60, Barnsdall 31: Logan Fowler and Logan Horsman poured in 13 and 12 points, respectively, followed by Rocky Hester with 10 to fuel the CV Trojan attack. Other top scorers included Mav Condry and Shelton Virden with six apiece and Tate Longan with five. Barnsdall trailed by only eight at halftime, 21-13.

"We took three charges. … I thought Barnsdall outplayed us in the first half hands down. (Barnsdall coach) Wade Corder does a great job. Those kids really played hard,” said Caney Valley coach Tug Brinker.

Girls: Caney Valley 64, Barnsdall 31: Libby Thompson threw in 16 points, followed by Kensly Foreman with 13 to lead Caney Valley. Emma Gray chipped in with nine, followed by Sydni Brown with eight.

Said Caney Valley coach Deric Longan, “I think our team size had a lot to do with our success. We also shot the ball pretty decent. We’re playing with six seniors and our experience had a lot to do with helping us get an early lead.”

Boys: Wesleyan Christian School 64, Barnsdall 36: Ty Cloud, Kyle Kelley and Trey White all scored in double figures for WCS.

WCS coach Curt Cloud said, “I think we had a lot more experience. Barnsdall is pretty young.”

Boys: Copan 79, South Coffeyville 42: Copan has dashed out to a 4-0 season start with second-year head coach Kolton Stacy as the guide. The Hornets have outscored their opponents 242-140. Shooter Brewington might have scored 25, except for having to sit due to early foul trouble, against South Coffeyville. Tryston Easter continued to set the emotional tenor and Karson Woodworth led the defense.

"Four-O feels good. We have to continue to get better and improve to reach the goals we have for this team," Copan coach Kolton Stacy said.

Girls: Chelsea 51, Oklahoma Union 24: Oklahoma Union had a tough outing in its historic season debut — made so by the absence of David Lampton as head coach. Lampton had coached the team for 30-plus years — including winning a state championship in 1997 — prior to leaving to coach elsewhere this season.

Other boys results Monday and Tuesday: Fairland beat Nowata in its season opener, 62-50; Chelsea took down Oklahoma Union, 59-30, also in its campaign debut.

Other girls results Monday and Tuesday: South Coffeyville outlasted Copan, 49-25; Fairland barely edged Nowata, 53-48, in its season opener. Barnsdall defeated Wesleyan Christian School, 48-30, to open the campaign.
