Cincinnati gets 1st state champion of fall 2023 as Wyoming junior wins DII golf title

Wyoming junior Finley Bartlett came from behind to win the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II boys golf state championship Saturday at NorthStar Golf Club in Sunbury.

Bartlett shot a 72 in Saturday’s second round to come back from a four-shot deficit. Combined with his 74 on Friday, his 146 was two strokes better than Andy Steed from Clinton-Massie, who finished second at 148 (75-73).

Bartlett is the first individual state golf champion in Wyoming team history. He helped the Cowboys finish second in the team standings to Kettering Alter. Alter shot a 596 to beat Wyoming by 51 shots.

The win capped a memorable fall for the Wyoming junior. He won the sectional and district titles with identical scores of 67 in those tournaments. Steed had finished second to him at the district tourney with a 68. He averaged 33.9 per nine holes to lead the Cincinnati Hills League as well.

Bartlett also leads Wyoming to runner-up finish

Bartlett wasn't at the state tournament just representing himself. Bartlett helped lead Wyoming to a 647 (319-328) team total over the two days, which turned into a second-place finish overall. Alter repeated as state champions with a 596 total (294-302).

Along with Bartlett, Jack Webb finished with a 158 total, good to finish 20th in the state. Hagan Kaylor also had a 168 and Charlie Steed had a 178 with John Meis adding a 187 as the team's fifth scorer.

Madeira was also competing, finishing No. 7 in the state with a 665 (334-331). Tanner Temar led Madeira with a 154, followed by Eddie Hartung's 159, Keegan World's 174, Jackson Cunningham's 178 and a 199 from Andrew Simpson.

Roger Bacon freshman Allister Fike wrapped up his first season with a 173 (89-84) to finish tied for No. 38 in the state.

Fenwick girls finish 3rd, Seven Hills 10th

In the Division II girls side, Fenwick and Seven Hills both earned top 10 finishes in the state.

While Columbus Academy (620 total score) and Garaway (637) ran away from the field, it was Fenwick that took the bronze with a two-day total of 710 (358-352). Sophia Rush led the Falcons with a 161 (80-81), good for 15th on the individual board. Fenwick also added Emma Lohman's 176, Avery Roethlisberger's 186, Elizabeth Haas' 190 and Sophia King's 199.

Seven Hills shot a 376 in both rounds, finishing with a 752 in a 10th-place finish. Scoring for Seven Hills were Julia Zhu (179), Maggie Motch (184), Lucie Pease (184), Madeline Jordan (208) and Fiona Odriscoll (217).

Seven Hills boys finish 7th in DIII final

There was no repeat in the cards for Seven Hills. Last season's Division III state champions returned to state again in 2023 but managed a seventh-place finish after scoring a 675 (331-344).

Charlie Mullin had a 153 in last year's competition to finish in third. This season, Mullin nearly matched his total, shooting 154 (78-76), leading to a tie for eighth place.

Billy Good followed Mullin with a 162 while Seven Hills was also represented by Andrew Zhou (178), Matia Kastner (181) and William Hartmann (190).
