Chudzinski won't name Weeden starter
Brandon Weeden must compete for the Cleveland Browns' starting quarterback job, which isn't a surprise to the second-year passer drafted in the first round of the 2012 draft by a different management regime.
First-year coach Rob Chudzinski said he won't hand the job to any quarterback, including incumbent starter Weeden, until a competition with veteran backup Jason Campbell plays out.
"I feel good about where we're at right now," Chudzinski told CBS Cleveland. "(Weeden has) been working with the first group and we'll just see as we go forward. We're (working) on air right now so it's very early but I do like what I've seen so far and we'll see how it goes. Right now it's too early to say anything one way or another."
The Browns drafted outside linebacker Barkevious Mingo sixth overall and didn't have a second-round pick. The entire draft expired without Cleveland adding a quarterback to its roster.
"I expect both guys to compete. I don't know any other way," said Chudzinski.
Weeden started 15 games as a rookie last season and had 14 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He completed 57.4 percent of his passes and was sacked 28 times.
Chudzinski will open up the offense with Norv Turner working to install a vertical passing game to complement running back Trent Richardson, who is expected to remain the focal point of the system.
