Christian Scott dominates in Mets' spring training win over Marlins

The Mets defeated the Miami Marlins 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon in Jupiter, Fla.

Here are some key takeaways…

- Christian Scott, the Mets’ top pitching prospect and No. 5 overall prospect according to MLB Pipeline, got the start on the mound in this one.

The righty looked sharp out of the gates, striking out the first two hitters he faced. Scott struck out two more Marlins in the second, showcasing a wicked sweeper along with solid command of his fastball, which was around 95-96 mph for most of his outing.

Scott’s only blemish of the day was a hanging slider to Jonah Bride, who lifted it over the wall in left for a solo homer in the third inning. But other than that, the 24-year-old was electric, allowing just two hits and one run over 4.0 innings while striking out seven Marlins without a walk. Scott was a strike-throwing machine, with 44 of his 59 pitches finding the zone.

- Many of the Mets regulars didn’t play on Wednesday, but Brandon Nimmo was at the top of the lineup, and he came up with a clutch RBI single in the top of the fifth inning, taking a Mychal Givens pitch the other way to left center to give the Mets a 3-1 lead.

Nimmo delivered again in the top of the sixth, again with a line drive to left center, this time driving in two more runs to extend the Mets' lead to 5-2.

- Edwin Diaz was finally charged with his first run of the spring. Coming in to pitch the fifth inning, Diaz allowed back-to-back walks to start the frame, and both runners moved into scoring position on a double steal. Diaz recorded two outs, but he was pulled with his pitch count up to 21. Wilkin Ramos entered the game and threw a wild pitch to score a run, which was charged to Diaz.

- The Mets had three players in the lineup who are all likely competing for the final spot on the 26-man Opening Day roster – DJ Stewart, Luke Voit, and Ji Man Choi.

Voit drove in a run with a sac fly to left in the top of the third. Stewart went 0-for-3 with a walk, and Choi went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
