The New York Giants are often overlooked and underappreciated. Analysts usually find something, anything wrong them. These same geniuses even use the word “lucky” or the phrase “in spite of” when describing the franchise’s most recent Super Bowl victories.

Chris Simms, former NFL quarterback and son of Giants legend Phil Simms, is not one of them. He has ranked the New York Football Giants second overall in his preseason power rankings on Bleacher Report:
A lot of people might not realize it, but the Giants were tied for the fifth-best record in the NFL last season (11-5). The Giants also beat Dallas, the team with the best record in the NFC, twice. Now they’re better.
Most of the talking heads minimize the Giants’ 2016 season. We always hear how difficult it is to win in the NFL but when a team wins 11 games the words “lucky” or “in spite of” should never be used. The Dallas Cowboys won 13 games and were placed on a pedestal because of it.
Simms also gave props for some of the free agent and draft moves:
This was already one of the best defensive teams in the NFL. Additions like Brandon Marshall, Evan Engram, and blocking tight end Rhett Ellison could make the offensive side of the ball equally dangerous.
Marshall and Engram are immediate upgrade to a receiving corps that just couldn’t score in the red zone. The additions of Ellison (who spent his NFL career until now opening holes for Adrian Peterson) and Fluker can only help the blocking game.
The offensive line is the biggest question mark coming into 2017, specifically offensive tackles Ereck Flowers and Bobby Hart. It seems that the offseason work at the Giants’ training facility is starting to pay off but the real proof will be in preseason games.
Simms summed things up succinctly:
They have no excuses this season. They’re in the conversation for the best receiving corps in football, the best secondary in football, and the best defensive line in football. When you have those three things plus a Super Bowl-winning quarterback in Eli Manning, you have a legit football team.
All of the above is true. There will be no excuses in 2017. The Giants have all the tools necessary to make a Super Bowl run, including the most scrutinized, underappreciated two-time Super Bowl winning quarterback in NFL history.
Meanwhile, Simms believes the rest of the NFC East will look up to the Giants. He ranked the Dallas Cowboys sixth, the Washington Redskins
