Chiefs to wear white-on-white uniforms against Chargers on Sunday night
The Kansas City Chiefs are busting out a fabled alternate uniform color combination for Week 11.
The Chiefs announced on Friday that they’ll be wearing their white-on-white uniform combination for “Sunday Night Football” against the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs wore it twice last season, including against the Los Angeles Chargers on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 15.

While the jersey combination is a bit of a fan favorite, the white-on-white look has a bit of a tainted past in Kansas City. The Chiefs wore the uniform combination back in Super Bowl I when they lost to the Green Bay Packers. Losing that game prompted a superstitious Hank Stram to ban the white-on-white uniform combination and it stayed that way for over 20 years.
Marty Schottenheimer brought the white-on-white jerseys back in 1989 and they’ve worn them occasionally ever since. They’ve worn them three times during the Patrick Mahomes era (Rams 2018, Raiders 2021 and Chargers 2021), busting them out for prime-time games. Each of those three times the Chiefs have scored no fewer than 34 points and no greater than 51.
Let’s hope the white-on-white combination paves way for another high-scoring game against the Chargers. Los Angeles has scored no more than 23 points in a single game since Week 4. This AFC West matchup could be the difference between an insurmountable lead on the division for Kansas City or providing Los Angeles the spark they need to claw their way back into the race.
