Chiefs UDFA Spotlight: Wake Forest S Nasir Greer

A three-star cornerback prospect out of Stockbridge, Georgia, Greer had offers from nearly a dozen different schools. He opted to commit to Wake Forest in June of 2017 and it didn’t take long for him to make an impact on the football team.

In 2018, Greer led all true freshmen for the Demon Deacons in tackles. He boasted versatility with the ability to play both cornerback and safety. During his sophomore season in 2019, Greer became a starter on defense, finishing third in the ACC in forced fumbles. His 2020 season was ended prematurely by an ACL injury. When he returned to the field in 2021, he never seemed to be fully healthy.

Fit with the Chiefs

Denny Medley-USA TODAY Sports

Greer was one of the 30 prospects the Chiefs hosted ahead of the 2022 NFL draft on a visit. That visit was likely conducted to evaluate his knee injury with the team’s medical staff. Prior to his knee injury, many believed that Greer was on the path to becoming a top-100 draft pick. He showed a nose for the football in both the passing game and the running game. With the injury and how his past two seasons went, Greer ended up undrafted. Kansas City could become the team to capitalize on that misfortune.

While Greer did play some snaps at cornerback with Wake Forest, he seems to be working primarily at the safety position in Kansas City. That could change given the number of injuries the team is currently dealing with at the cornerback spot, but I’d expect the Chiefs to keep him at one spot for now.

There was a lot of turnover in the defensive secondary at the safety position this past offseason, with Daniel Sorensen, Armani Watts and Tyrann Mathieu all finding new teams. Justin Reid, Bryan Cook and Juan Thornhill figure to be the top trio of safeties in Kansas City, but the team typically carries four on the 53-man roster. That fourth spot is hardly set in stone, but it has some quality competition between players like Deon Bush, Zayne Anderson, Nazeeh Johnson and Devon Key. Greer should provide even greater competition at that spot, and should he not make the 53-man roster, he could be a shoo-in for the practice squad.
