Chiefs HC Andy Reid provides injury updates after win over Cardinals
The Kansas City Chiefs had a long injury list following the Week 1 win over the Arizona Cardinals.
Andy Reid updated reporters after the game, naming five players who were dinged up during the course of the game. Three players seem to be in wait-and-see situations with their injuries, but Reid expressed optimism about two players who were able to return and finish the game.
“As far as the injuries go, Trey Smith hurt his ankle,” Reid began. “We’ll just see how he does here overnight. (Trent) McDuffie strained his hamstring, we’ll see how he does. Then, Justin Watson hurt his chest, so we’ve got to see what that is. . . (Harrison) Butker, his ankle, he hurt that. Again, he came in and kicked the field goals.”
Smith, McDuffie and Watson seem to be in a holding pattern until some time has passed, but it sounds like Butker should be good for Week 2.
Of course, everyone wants to know about Patrick Mahomes, who played through the game with a left wrist injury, which was suffered on the opening touchdown throw.
“Pat (Mahomes) landed on his wrist, we’re doing a little work on that coming up here,” Reid said. “We’ll see how he does. He did that early and finished (the game).”
Mahomes also spoke about the injury, which wasn’t to his throwing hand, after the game.
“I fell on it on that first touchdown, I kind of threw my hand back and fell on it,” Mahomes said. “But I just got it looked at, and everything looked good. Hopefully, it’s not something that lingers around, something that we can kind of get cleared up quickly.”
As Reid mentioned, Mahomes played the entire game after injuring his wrist in the first quarter. His wrist was heavily wrapped, but he didn’t seem to be limited by the injury, with 30-of-39 completed passes for 360 yards and five touchdowns on the day. Mahomes admitted that the wrist is a bit sore, but that X-Rays came back negative.
“I mean, it’s sore now, for sure,” Mahomes said. “Definitely, we went and looked at it and got all the X-Rays and stuff like that. It looked good, so we’re happy with that. Now, it’s a short week, so you’re going to have to be ready to go. But as the season goes on, you’re going to have those bruises and you’re going to have to play through it.”
We’ll see what the future holds for Smith, McDuffie and Watson, but right now it appears the Chiefs will have their star quarterback and starting kicker on Thursday.
