Charlie Woods attempting to play in Cognizant Classic; enters pre-qualifying event Thursday

Tiger Woods has not played in the Cognizant Classic since 2018. Now, his son, Charlie, may beat him back into the field.

Charlie Woods, 15, will compete Thursday in a pre-qualifier for the Cognizant Classic in the Palm Beaches. He will play at Lost Lake Golf Club in Hobe Sound, one of four pre-qualifying sites, and tee off at 7:39 a.m. in an attempt to advance to the Monday qualifier.

Five players and ties from each pre-qualifying site will advance to the Monday final qualifier at Tesoro Club in Port St. Lucie. Each site will include 120 players. Four players from the Monday qualifier will earn a spot in the field for the Feb. 29-March 3 event at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens.

If Charlie makes it through both qualifying stages, he’ll make his first start on the PGA Tour at 15 years, 21 days old. Tiger made his tour debut at Riviera Country Club in 1992 at 16 years, 1 month and 28 days old.

Charlie recently played at the PNC Championship, teaming up with his dad. They finished tied for fifth at 19-under. He was part of The Benjamin School's state championship golf team, carding a 78-76 during Benjamin's Class 1A title run. Charlie shot a career-low round of 66 to win his age group's regional qualifier for the Notah Begay III Junior Golf National Championships

Charlie and Tiger have spent more time together on the course recently with Tiger spending most of last year recovering from ankle surgery and Charlie now able to compete with his dad. They practice and play more together and Tiger, who lives on Jupiter Island, has caddied for Charlie.

Tiger has made four starts in the Cognizant, formerly the Honda Classic, his last in 2018 when he finished 12th. Last week, Tiger played in his first official PGA Tour event in 10 months at Genesis but withdrew Friday after becoming ill.
