Chargers' Floyd has knee strain

The San Diego Chargers already have lost one wide receiver for the season because of injury, but they appear to have avoided a more devastating loss Monday.

One week after receiver Danario Alexander was knocked out for the season with a torn ACL, fellow receiver Malcom Floyd was injured at Monday's practice.

The Chargers initially feared the worst but early tests on his left leg showed a strain, the team said.

"I'm not saying we lost Malcom," quarterback Philip Rivers told UT San Diego. "I'm not conceding that quite yet."

A knee strain or sprain could still sit Floyd for a few weeks. He's expected to seek a second opinion.

Floyd fell to the ground, his leg caught in an awkward position, after battling cornerback Shareece Wright in the end zone. Ironically, Alexander also was hurt on a play involving Wright.

New Chargers coach Mike McCoy immediately called for the trainers and players knelt in prayer around their injured and dejected looking teammate as he was taken away for an MRI.

The 31-year-old Floyd led the Chargers last season with 56 receptions good for 814 yards. He was projected as one of the starting wide receivers.
