Central Kitsap, Crosspoint snag state tournament berths in high school girls soccer

Central Kitsap's girls soccer team pulled off an upset win Wednesday to clinch a Class 3A state tournament berth.

Facing No. 4 seed Prairie, the top 3A team Greater St. Helens League this fall, in a West Central/Southwest Bi-District tournament elimination game at Franklin Pierce High School, No. 12 Central Kitsap prevailed with a 2-0 victory. Maleia Dayao and Kylah Coulter scored goals and senior Rachael Remnet recorded the shutout in net.

Central Kitsap (9-4-4) secured its first state tournament berth since 2019, when the Cougars placed third.

"We looked great tonight," said Central Kitsap first-year head coach Patrick Leonard, whose team knocked out Bainbridge in a shootout earlier this week. "I am so proud of our girls and how we played."

Sea-Tac League 1B champion Crosspoint also earned a state tournament berth on Wednesday, winning 5-0 in a district semifinal match against Friday Harbor at Gordon Field in Bremerton.

Brooke Berens had a hat trick, while Lucia Wasson and Kaylle Ajanovic added goals. The Warriors (15-0) face Mount Vernon Christian for the district title Saturday at Sammamish High School at 4 p.m.

Volleyball teams targeting playoff games

Olympic League 2A volleyball teams will begin play in the West Central/Sea-King tournament on Friday as Sammamish High School and Foster High School are hosting matches through Saturday. Four West Sound teams — North Kitsap (14-2), Kingston (7-9), North Mason (7-10) and Olympic (5-14) — qualified for the 16-team tournament.

North Kitsap is the No. 2 seed and will face No. 7 Sequim in a winner-to-state match Friday at 6 p.m. Other opening-round matches include No. 10 Kingston against No. 15 Evergreen (6 p.m. at Foster), No. 14 Olympic against No. 11 Tyee (4 p.m. at Foster) and No. 13 North Mason against No. 12 Franklin Pierce (4 p.m. at Sammamish). Kingston, Olympic and North Mason must win three consecutive loser-out matches in order to reach state.

Bainbridge (12-4) plays in a Class 3A West Central/Southwest Bi-District play-in game Nov. 8. South Kitsap (6-10) and Central Kitsap (10-7) both finished up league play this week and will compete in district play beginning Nov. 10.

Klahowya Secondary School is hosting the West Central District 1A tournament, which begins play Thursday. The host Eagles (9-8) were scheduled to host a loser-out game against Charles Wright. A win would put Klahowya into a semifinal match against Cascade Christian on Saturday at home at 1 p.m.

Kingston football tops Foss to finish season

Ethan Goldizen's first season as head coach of Kingston's football team ended Wednesday with a victory as the Buccaneers knocked off Foss 12-7 in a game played at Mount Tahoma High School.

Senior running back Camden Singer totaled 169 yards and two touchdowns for Kingston (2-8). The Buccaneers snapped an eight-game losing streak with the victory.

Cougars' Smith earns athlete of the week award

Central Kitsap volleyball player Ellie Smith earned the the Kitsap Sun athlete of the week award in an online poll that drew 1,396 votes. Nominees for the award are submitted by coaches each week.

Smith, who had nine kills, 22 digs and two blocks in wins over River Ridge and Timberline, collected 662 votes, followed by Bremerton football player Alijah Logova (537 votes), North Kitsap football player Cole Edwards (85), Klahowya tennis player Aiden Michael (81), North Mason soccer player Grace Smelcer (17) and Bainbridge tennis player Aidan McLennan (14).
