Center back Fontas joins Sporting Kansas City

Center back Andreu Fontas, a 10-year professional from Spain, signed with Sporting Kansas City, the MLS club announced Wednesday.

Fontas, who signed an MLS contract through 2022, was with La Liga's Celta Vigo for five seasons.

"Andreu is an experienced defender who strengthens our roster," SKC manager Peter Vermes said in a statement. "He has a lot of qualities we look for in a player, and we look forward to integrating him into the team as we prepare for the stretch run of the season."

Fontas started 100 of 105 league appearances for Celta Vigo and helped the club to the semifinals of the 2016-17 UEFA Europa League.

The center back reportedly chose MLS over other options in Spain's top flight.

Ike Opara and Matt Besler have been the featured pairing for 18 of SKC's 22 league matches this season.

Fontas, 28, is expected to provide depth at the position, but he might challenge Opara and Besler for a starting spot.

Opara and Besler have missed time because of injuries this season for Sporting Kansas City (10-6-6, 36 points), which is tied for third in the Western Conference with LA Football Club and behind FC Dallas and Portland, respectively.
