Catching up with former area athletes: Jagger Tyler off to fast start for USF wrestling

Dec. 26—SIOUX FALLS — Mitchell alum Jagger Tyler has had a strong start to his freshman season for the University of Sioux Falls' wrestling squad.

Tyler has a record of 13-4 at 157 pounds and has scored 53.5 team points, both of figures that lead the Cougars, which has brought back wrestling for the first time since 2011.

Tyler has two falls, two technical falls and three wins by major decision. He won his college debut on Nov. 4 in the Yellow Jacket Open at 157 pounds in Rochester, Minnesota, including a 6-5 championship decision over Iowa Central's Darnai Heard. He was also fourth at the Augsburg Invitational on Nov. 18 and he had a pair of victories in dual meets in December, including helping USF to its first dual victory as a Division II program 42-12 over Minnesota West.

USF is back in action on Jan. 13 hosting St. Cloud State in a Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference dual.

ABERDEEN — Sam Kruger, a Winner native, has fit into the Northern State University wrestling team this winter as a transfer from South Dakota State University.

Kruger, a 197-pound redshirt sophomore, has scored 58 team points so far with a 12-xx record with five pins to his name. Kruger ranked second on the team in match points scored with 136, only behind Winner High School teammate Wyatt Turnquist who has 139. Kruger leads the team in four-point nearfalls with 16. Kruger wrestled last season only as a second-semester wrestler, logging an 8-5 record.

For this season, Kruger was also 4-1 at the Jamestown Open on Nov. 4 and he was also 2-2 at the Midwest Classic tournament on Dec. 17 in Indianapolis, where the Wolves finished ninth as a team.

The Wolves pick up action on Jan. 5-6, 2024 at the NWCA National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

ORANGE CITY, Iowa — Canova native Ashtyn Wobig is among the players contributing to Northwestern College women's basketball's early success in 2023-24.

Wobig, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard from McCook Central High School, is averaging 2.2 points and 1.9 rebounds per game for coach Kristin Rotert's squad. The Red Raiders won four consecutive games going into the holiday break, capped with an 89-77 road win over No. 13-ranked Dakota State on Dec. 15.

Wobig, who has played in 11 of the team's 12 games this season, had a season-high six points on Nov. 18 against Concordia, hitting 3-for-3 shots from the field. She also had three points and three assists on Nov. 10 against Mayville State, and she played a season-best 23 minutes against Jamestown on Nov. 21.

The Red Raiders, who are receiving votes in the national top-25 poll, are 9-3 overall and 5-2 in GPAC games this season. Northwestern is back in action on Dec. 30 at Augustana University for a game in Sioux Falls.
