After months of waiting, baseball is back. Games aren’t officially being played on the field just yet, so we’ll have to enjoy bad spring training photos and grainy videos of players taking batting practice or tossing the ball around.

To the casual fan, that might sound pretty boring. There’s nothing exciting about watching pitchers toss a ball around. In response, we would ask if you’ve ever seen San Diego Padres pitcher Carter Capps take the mound?

Now that is a thing of beauty. Capps’ delivery is perfectly legal, by the way. He’s able to do his crazy jump off the mound and somehow get away with it. It seems unfair that Capps is able to release the ball with his back leg more than a foot off the rubber, but there’s no rule against it.

If you’re a long-time fan of baseball, you’re probably already aware of Capps’ unique delivery. We’ve covered it before, but we’ve never seen it in slow motion. On top of that, Capps missed all 2016 while recovering from Tommy John surgery, so it’s been a while since we could truly admire his crazy windup.

The last time he was healthy, Capps put up some dominant numbers. He posted a 1.16 ERA over 31 innings with the Miami Marlins in 2015. He’s expected to compete for the Padres’ closer role if he can recapture some of that dominance.

The only downside of Capps’ jumping windup is that the wind plays some awful tricks on his hair.

It’s been over a year since we’ve seen Carter Capps take the mound. Until today, we didn’t realize how much we missed him.
