Carroll softball shows resiliency in win as focus turns to 29-5A zone play

Earlier in the season at a tournament, the Carroll softball team faced multiple situations similar to Thursday's showdown with Flour Bluff. In those three tournament games, the Tigers ended up in tie games where they did not have a chance to finish because of tournament time limits, missing out on some potential learning opportunities.

Thursday afternoon, Carroll displayed some resilience and clutch ability that could be key in the race in District 29-5A's South Zone. The Tigers rallied from an early three-run deficit, then gave up a three-run lead only to win with a clutch base hit in the seventh from Ameris Garcia to defeat Flour Bluff 7-6.

The victory was the first in zone play for the Tigers (16-5-3 overall), but maybe more importantly it was an opportunity to finish a game and gain some momentum during a key part of the season.

"A lot of resiliency on this team, I think we've grown a lot from the beginning of the season until now," said Carroll coach AJ Caballero. "I don't think we've come back from being down three runs yet this season, for them to do that, we are making strides on the right path to where we want to be."

As zone play begins in District 29-5A, the Tigers are among the teams that have their sights on winning a zone title and earning a coveted playoff spot. Entering Thursday's game with Flour Bluff, the Tiger had won 11 straight games and have not lost a game since losing to Conroe way back on Feb. 17.

And until Thursday's game, the Tigers had rarely been tested but they passed it against the Hornets.

"Our bats are going along really well, I feel like all of us have a lot of power and all of us have a role on this team," said Garcia, who was 2 for 3 on the day with two RBIs. "(We learned) to stay up the whole time. We didn't get in our head, didn't let the score defeat us, we stayed up the whole time, I think that was really good."

Caballero added this was a learning opportunity for the team, and can use it for future contests as a confidence booster and learning chance.

"In some tournaments, (we've) kind of gone back and forth here and there, and of course we tied those three games in a row, we ran out of time in the IWA tournament, so we weren't able to finish," Caballero said. "Them being able to finish was a good job."
