Cardinals trade Tennessee QB Joshua Dobbs to Vikings at deadline after Kirk Cousins injury

Former Tennessee football quarterback Joshua Dobbs has found a new home in the NFL.

Just ahead of the NFL's trade deadline at 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Dobbs was traded to the Minnesota Vikings, the Arizona Cardinals announced.

Why was Joshua Dobbs traded?

Dobbs started the first eight games of the season for Arizona, leading the Cardinals to a 1-7 record while putting up solid stats. With regular starter Kyler Murray expected to return from injury, Dobbs was all but assured of returning to a backup role.

Instead, he'll be in the thick of the NFC North race for the Vikings (4-4), who trail division leader Detroit by two games.

The former Vols standout will presumably replace Kirk Cousins for the rest of the season, as Cousins tore his Achilles in Sunday's win over Green Bay.

Dobbs played at Tennessee from 2013-16 and threw for 7,138 yards and 53 touchdowns with an additional 2,160 rushing yards and 32 scores.

The fourth-round pick of the 2017 NFL Draft is now playing for his seventh NFL team or practice squad, as he's also been rostered by the Steelers, Jaguars, Browns, Lions, Titans, Cardinals and now Vikings. Prior to the 2023 season, he was traded by Cleveland to Arizona.

The Vikings sent Arizona a sixth-round pick for Dobbs and a seventh-round pick.
