CAPE COD SPORTS: JPII boys golf wins South Sectional championship

The St. John Paul II boys golf team captured the MIAA Division 3 South Sectional Golf title out of 12 teams as they shot a 325 at the Wianno Golf Club on Monday. The victory earned them a berth in Monday's State Championship at Sterling Country Club.

All three of the JPII tri-captains played a part in the victory. Timmy Adams and Jack Carstensen were the lone golfers out of 73 players to shoot in the 70s with 79s as they shared medalist honors. The other tri-captain, Matt Curley, joined a crowd of seven players who shot 81 (all qualified for the State Championship), while sophomore Chris Heywood finished with an 86.

Bourne placed second with a score of 332 and also clinched a berth to the MIAA State Tournament Finals. Nate McDonnell led with a 80, while Luca Finton followed up a 81. Ryan Burgess (85), Griffin Kelly (86), Brett Lucier (90) and Ronan Kelly (93) rounded out the top six.

Nantucket, Sandwich, Cape Cod Academy each shot a team score of 341 tied for third place. Monomoy placed sixth, while Upper Cape finished ninth.

Boys Golf

MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals: Barnstable placed 8th out of 15 teams as the lone Cape team in the MIAA Division 1 South Sectionals. Chad Tordone led the way as he shot a 72, which was tied for third place, and qualified him for the State Finals.

Girls Volleyball

Barnstable 3, Nantucket 0: The Red Hawks (15-3) swept the Whalers (10-7) in straight sets (25-21, 25-22, 25-15). Molly Fredo led the offense with 13 kills, while Charlotte Sullivan added four kills, and three aces for the Red Hawks. Dylan Andres (five kills, two blocks), Molly Gleason (seven digs, three aces, three kills), and Sadie Wellbeloved (25 assists) all contributed.

Chloe Marrero led the offense with 12 kills, while Yahely del Rosario Gomez dished out 16 assists for Nantucket (10-7). Vicki Todorova chipped in 13 digs.

Falmouth 3, St. John Paul II 1: The Clippers (9-9) beat the Lions (11-5) in four sets (25-17, 25-12, 18-25, 25-18). Christina Femino had 27 assists, eight digs, five aces, and two kills, while Maggie McLean finished with seven kills, three aces, and a block. Jaylynn Fernandez had five digs and an ace, while Erin Barr finished with 10 kills for Falmouth.

Zlata Alioshka finished with five aces, four kills, 14 assists, and seven digs to lead the Lions. Rosanna Sullivan (six kills, 16 digs), Caitlin McGrail (three kills, 11 digs), and Charlotte Sturgis (five kills) also contributed.

Bourne 3, Apponequet 0: The Canalmen (15-4) won with a sweep (25-12, 25-10, 25-15). Lily Russell finished with 20 digs and four aces, Elena Timo added eight kills and 16 assists, while Nola Timo chipped in 10 kills, nine digs and two aces for Bourne. Sofia Halunen contributed five kills and 16 assists, Mayla Muldoon had four kills, and Hannah Petrillo added four aces on a serving streak in the first set.

Sturgis East 3, Nauset 1: The Storm (6-8) picked up the win over the Warriors (5-12) in four sets (25-20, 25-23, 17-25, 28-26). Brooke Bouchard, Natalie Fredriksen, Sofia Palaza, and Fiala Gerardi played well for Sturgis East.

Wareham 3, Mashpee 0: Stacey Santos and Ava Pina played well from the service line, but Wareham won in straight sets (25-18, 27-25, 25-23).

Girls Soccer

St. John Paul II 4, Sturgis West 3: Addison Cheney scored twice, which included the winner unassisted in the 78th minute, for the Lions (13-2-1). Lauren Rogers and Ella Cheney also netted a goal, while goalkeeper Alex DePaula made a diving save to her right just barely deflecting the ball wide of the net. Maddie Ward, Avery Haines and Jocelyn Demedeiros each scored a goal for Sturgis West (6-6-1).

Falmouth Academy 6, Atlantis Charter 0: Faye McGuire had a hat trick to lead the Mariners (7-7) in the win. Thalia O’Neill, Willow Lajoie, and Mira Davis (first varsity) each netted a goal.

Cape Cod Academy 3, Upper Cape 3: The Seahawks (5-8-1) and Rams (9-5-1) ended in a draw. Jenna Marsh scored two goals, while Maeve Lopes added another goal with an assist from Lydia Stanney for the Seahawks. Flynn Kayajan had 16 saves in goal.

Adryanna Turner had a brace (two goals), while Alaina Hines scored the other goal for the Rams.

Mashpee 3, Carver 0: Hailey Garcia, Charlie Jenkins, and Rachel Fish each scored a goal, while goalkeeper Norah Paolini had seven saves in the shutout for the Falcons (4-11).

Sandwich 2, Rockland 1: Izzy Bar and Aubrie Schwager each scored a goal for the Blue Knights (9-5-1).Defenders Julia Sutton, Ayla Whitney and Ella Raymond played well, while Abi Kinney and Sophia Wanat shared time in net.

Dennis-Yarmouth 0, Barnstable 0: The Dolphins (1-14-2) and Red Hawks (0-14-2) ended in a draw for the second time this season. Niamh Ryan played well on defense, Molly Young played aggressively at the midfield position, and Elizabeth Ritchie also had some good saves towards the end of the game for D-Y.

Apponequet 8, Bourne 0: The Canalmen (8-9-1) ended their regular season finale with a loss.

Boys Soccer

Bourne 1, Apponequet 0: Senior captain Leo Andrade scored the lone goal off a shot assisted by Quinn Moriarty for the Canalmen (2-11-2). Nathan Reynolds had eights saves for his fourth shutout of the season.

Sturgis East 0, Rising Tide 0: The Storm (6-5-3) ended in a draw. Gabriel Codjoe, Travis Markowski, Pedro Melo and PJ Dacruz played well, while Isaac Rocha had his fourth shutout of the season.

Upper Cape 1, Cape Cod Academy 0: Junior Gio Haga scored the lone goal assisted by senior co-captain Gideon Drury for the Rams (12-2-2). The Seahawks fall to 1-12.

Mashpee 5, Carver 0: Thanos Pavlo scored a goal and dished out an assist to lead the Falcons (5-9-2). Preston Joia, Lucas Dehelean, Alex Longman and Yianno Pavlo each added a goal. Michael Valois dished out two assists, while Tyler Theodore and Tristan Mastrogiacomo also chipped in a helper each. Brody Perry played well in the goal for the shutout.

Sandwich 3, Rockland 2: CJ Bice, Daniel Oman, and Adam Klaiber each scored a goal for the Blue Knights (9-3-3). Matt Murray, Maadeh Biruk, and Sam Hart each had one assist.

Falmouth Academy 2, Atlantis Charter 2 The Mariners (7-4-3) ended in their third draw of the season.

Field Hockey

Monomoy 7, Martha’s Vineyard 0: Emery Cappallo and Sam Clarke each had two goals and two assists for the Sharks (12-2-3). Emily Layton, Susannah Brown and Tessa Grodzicki each found the back of the net. Ella Reeves had two assists, Kate Huse added another assist, and Maddie Swett had the shutout in goal. The Vineyarders fall to 0-9-4.

St. John Paul II 0, Dennis-Yarmouth 0: The Lions (10-2-4) and Dolphins (6-7-4) ended in a tie for the Stick it to Cancer Game in honor of Cancer Awareness Month. Madi Ross played well in net for JPII.

Barnstable 8, Bridgewater-Raynham 0: Barnstable (12-3-2) ended its regular season tied with Monomoy for the Cape and Islands League championship. Alexa Garthee had four goals and an assist, while Ally McEneaney finished with three goals and two assists for Barnstable. Penny Baroni had one goal and one assist, while Meili Raspante had the shutout in goal.
