Historic season: Cape Cod and Islands high school girls tennis rankings

The girls tennis teams on the Cape and Islands had their best overall season as they had double digit teams (10) in the MIAA state tournament for the first time.

Three teams made it to the Round of 16.

The St. John Paul II Lions had one of their best regular seasons in program history as they finished 20-0.

Mashpee may have had the best turnaround. After missing the playoffs last season, the Falcons bounced back with a 12-8 record this year and played in the postseason.

Here are the final Cape and Islands girls tennis rankings for the 2024 season.

1. St. John Paul II (22-1, 1)

It's tough to not put a team that suffered their first loss of the season in the Round of 8 (Div. 3) at the top. The Lions fell just short of a perfect season, but an unbeaten regular season is not to be overlooked. They finished the season unbeaten at home, including the playoffs. The first loss came on the road to No. 4 Weston. The No. 4 Lions swept their other two opponents No. 12 Boston Latin Academy (Round of 16) and No. 28 Dunstable (Round of 32). Lilly Walker, Bella Scoletti, and Rossanna Sullivan were the single competitors, while Ava P. Walker, Grace Walker, Kayla Katziff and Bridget Moran held it down at doubles.

2. Monomoy (16-5, 2)

The Sharks were the only other team that reached the Round of 8. Monomoy had a slightly tougher road than JPII with a road game in the second round. After a home sweep over No. 23 Rockport in the first round, the No. 10 Sharks had to travel on the road to face No. 7 Lenox Memorial in the Round of 16. They responded with another sweep win as they upset Lenox. They could not pull off another upset win as No. 2 Manchester Essex ended the Sharks' season in the Round of 8. Tatiana Malone, Lilly Gould, Hanadi Rezk led the way for single matches, while Darcy Addison, Karina Khalasa, Madison Mahfouz and Cecelia Hand played well at doubles for Monomoy.

3. Nantucket (11-7, 4)

The No. 12 Whalers were the third team that made it to the Round of 16 (Div. 4). They started their postseason run with a home sweep victory over No. 21 Tyngsborough. They then ran into No. 5 Ipswich, who defeated them 4-1 in the second round. Joan Harris, Lily Chibnik, and Lauren Cotune played at singles, while Chloe Marerro, Hannah Gerardi, Sara Dusealt, Fiona Keltz and Sutton LeBrecht shared time at doubles.

4. Nauset (8-10, NR)

The Warriors join the three above them as the only Cape and Islands teams that recorded a playoff win. The No. 31 Warriors defeated No. 34 Whitinsville Christian 3-2 in the Div. 3 preliminary round. Nicole Boyce, Anjali O'Brien, Sophia Votteler played at singles, and Faye Adams, Chloe Hand, Haley Jackson and Kendall Faley played at doubles.

5. Cape Cod Academy (12-5, 3)

The Seahawks get this last spot because of their regular season success. They were the fourth highest ranked team with the 14th spot in Div. 3. The Seahawks hosted their first round match of the playoffs, but No. 19 Apponequet came away with a 4-1 win. Lili Shanahan, Julia McCaffrey, and Jemma Meadows were the singles competitors, while Yoana Dokleva, Molly Lowery, Kaleigh Howe and Meegan Morey played well at doubles.

Honorable Mention

Mashpee (12-9)

The Falcons' first time back in the playoffs since 2022 was just short of a playoff win. The No. 17 Falcons fell in the Round of 32 as No. 16 Millis won 3-2. Mariele Henley, Hannah Rogers, and Esme Milde have played well in singles matches, while Alina Doolan, Suzie Dias, Grace Dion, and Emily Doolan have led at doubles for Mashpee.

Falmouth (9-10)

The No. 22 Clippers finished their season in the Round of 32 to No. 11 Norwell. Geneveive Maranchie, Maia Ledwell, and Kirkland O’Leary played at singles, and Alexis Christian, Marcella DePaula, Sadie Inman and Phoebe Hodgson were the double competitors.

Sturgis East (2-11)

The Storm made the playoffs despite having two wins on the season because their schedule was pretty tough. The No. 22 Storm fell to No. 11 Quaboag Regional in the first round of the playoffs. Keegan Andres, Martina Garcia-Raya, and Sydney Faranetta led the singles, while Eli Mariak, Audrey Wankel, Matejah Champagne and Lanney Lowenstein played at doubles.

Martha's Vineyard (7-10)

The No. 23 Vineyarders almost pulled off an upset win over No. 10 Danvers with a 3-2 loss in the Div. 3 Round of 32. Laina Dubin, Leah Thomson, and Zoe Treitman played at singles, while Sophia Balsas, Ellie Pennington, Sophie Roads and Sophie Winters were at the doubles.

Bourne (8-11)

The No. 28 Lady Canalmen had a matchup against a top five seed in the Division 4 first round with No. 5 Ipswich. Bourne came up short as Ipswich won 4-1. Zoe Ridl, McKinley Wenzel, and Anna Conlon played at singles, while Lily Russel, Sofia Halunen, Ainsley Hopwood, and Zoe Noonan led Bourne at doubles.
