Cape Cod Baseball League roundup: Hussey's late home run wins it for Wareham Gatemen

Going into the bottom of the eighth inning, the Wareham Gatemen (8-6-2) trailed 6-4 to the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox (9-6-1). With a 2-2 count and two on base, Nick McLain (Arizona St.) hit a double to left that scored Josh Stevenson (Louisiana St). Then, West Virginia's Grant Hussey stepped up the the plate.

Hussey hit a three-run home run that ended up being the winner for Wareham. Hussey capped off a monster night, finishing 3-for-4 with six RBIs, a run scored and a double. Louisville's Will Koger picked up the win on the mound as he went 1.2 innings, and gave up no hits, runs, or walks, while he struck out three.

Will King (Eastern Kentucky) hit a solo home run in the first inning, and finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs, two scored runs, and a walk. RJ Austin (Vanderbilt) and Zander Darby (California Santa Barbara) both went 1-for-2 with an RBI and one scored run for Y-D.

Falmouth Commodores 4, Orleans Firebirds 3

In the bottom of the ninth inning, Falmouth (4-10-2) pitcher KC Hunt was brought on for the first time to close the game out with a 4-2 lead. With one out, Fenwick Trimble (James Madison) stepped up to the plate for Orleans (7-9-2). After taking a first-pitch ball, Trimble connected on his first hit of the game, a solo home run to cut the lead to 4-3. Hunt stayed in the game, and did not panic, retiring the next two batters for the save. Rio Britton (North Carolina St) picked up the win on the mound, as he went two scoreless innings, and gave up one hit. Andy Blake (Duke) and Matt Halbach (California San Diego) each had two hits for the Firebirds.

Cotuit Kettleers 7, Brewster Whitecaps 5

With the game tied 5-5 after eight innings, both teams had a chance to take home the win in the last inning. At the top of the ninth, Kalae Harrison (North Carolina St) hit a single to second base that scored Kentucky's James McCoy, to give Couit a 6-5 lead. After Ryan Galanie's (Wofford) single to right field, a Whitecaps wild pitch allowed Cole Mathis (Charleston) to score. The defense of the Kettlers held the Whitecaps scoreless in the bottom of the ninth inning for the win.

Izaak Martinez (University of California San Diego) picked up the win on the mound as he pitched two scoreless innings and giving up no hits, and issuing a walk, for Cotuit (11-5). Harrison finished 2-for-5 (three RBIs), while Indiana's Carter Mathison went 2-for-3 (one run scored, one RBI). Teo Banks (Tulane) hit a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning.

Dylan Leach (Missouri Columbia) led the way with two RBIs, while Will Turner (South Alabama), James Tibbs (Florida St) and Jaime Ferrer (Florida St) each contributed an RBI for Brewster (6-9-2).

Bourne Braves 8, Chatham Anglers 2

The Braves did all of their scoring in three straight innings (third, fourth, fifth). Caden Bodine (Coastal Carolina U) and Gage Harrelson (Texas Tech) led the way at the plate as they both went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. On the mound, David Falco (Maryland College Park) picked up the win as he went two scoreless innings, allowed no walks or hits, and struck out three for Bourne (8-7-1). For Chatham (4-10-1), Sam Antonacci (Heartland CC) led the way offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Hyannis Harbor Hawks 10, Harwich Mariners 3

After trailing 3-1 going into the seventh inning, the Harbor Hawks (8-6-1) scored nine runs over the last three innings, which included a six-run eighth. Michael Sirota (Northeastern) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and two walks. Nick Mitchell (Western Illinois) finished 1-for-2 with two runs, and an RBI. Dennis Colleran (Northeastern) had the win as he threw one scoreless inning, allowing no hits or walks, and striking out one. For Harwich (9-6), Miami's Lorenzo Carrier hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning.
