Canyon girls get revenge on Randall with 82-51 victory

They may not have said it aloud, but the Canyon Lady Eagles knew what everyone was saying a few weeks ago when they lost on a buzzer-beating put-back to Randall. It was the first district loss for Canyon in six years and their first loss to Randall in 17 years. The whispers began about whether the legendary Canyon girls program was starting to fall off.

From start to finish Tuesday night at Randall High School, Canyon played like a team with one thing on its mind: Revenge.

Four players reached double-figures in scoring for Canyon while slowing down Randall's potent offense enough to dominate from start to finish in an 82-51 blowout victory. With Randall's loss Friday to West Plains and Canyon only having the Randall loss, the Lady Eagles are now in sole possession of first place in District 4-4A.

Canyon was blistering from the start. The Lady Eagles scored seven points in the opening minute while Randall scored none. Heck, it took Randall the entire first quarter just to reach that point. Canyon outscored the Lady Raiders 20-7 through one and held a 42-18 edge at halftime. The lead grew to 60-35 entering the fourth as Canyon controlled throughout.

While head coach Tate Lombard said it was just another game, even he had to admit the squad was a little extra fired up for this one.

"The old wound was still fresh in our minds," he said. "They put in good work this week and had a little chip on their shoulders. ... I thought we came out great, sharp and played well from the start. They never let up and I'm just proud of the effort."

Tai Wright led the way with 18 points, Jaylee Moss added 17 points, Sydnee Winfrey chipped in 12 and Addison Cunningham had 11. Randall was led by Sadie Sanchez with 24 points while Keylonai Shrubs had 10.

Canyon is now 22-6 overall and 11-1 in district while Randall is 23-8 overall and 10-2 in district. Randall hosts Hereford on Friday while Canyon hosts Pampa Friday night.
